Quiz Bowl is a competitive, academic, interscholastic activity for which players attend periodic practices and then represent their school at tournaments. Quiz bowl questions range over the entire spectrum of the middle school curriculum and also include a certain amount of current events, sports, and popular culture. The matches feature a blend of individual competition and team collaboration, since no individual player is likely to be an expert in all subject areas.

Practice Schedule: October 17 – end of competition season (usually early March):

Tuesdays after school, 3:30 to 4:15 p.m.
     Wednesdays before school, 7:45 to 8:15 p.m.
Practice Location: W206, Mr. Wrede’s room

Competition Schedule: Quiz Bowl tournaments are day-long (usually 8:30 a.m. to mid-afternoon, depending on if the team makes the playoffs) events through the winter. There are four that the PA MS Quiz Bowl Team attends most years.

  • December (weekday): The top four performing 8th graders will represent PA at the Archdiocese Quiz Bowl Tournament at the University of St. Thomas. This is usually on a Wednesday in mid-December and details will be announced as it gets closer.
  • January 27 (Saturday): GEMSTONE Tournament at Burnsville High School
  • February 17 (Saturday): EMERALD Tournament at Edgewood Middle School in Mounds View
  • Early March, there is usually another Saturday tournament hosted at DeLaSalle High School

Top teams will receive invitations to the NAQT Middle School National Championship Tournament (MSNCT). This is a weekend event near the end of the school year that allows the nation’s top teams to compete against each other. The 2017 MSNCT featured 160 teams, who came to Dallas, Texas for 22 rounds of amazing competition. The 2018 MSNCT will take place May 11 – May 13 in Rosemont, Illinois (near Chicago). Providence Academy has sent it’s Middle School Quiz Bowl team to Nationals in 2015, and our Upper School has had Nationals qualifying teams for the past several years consecutively!

Fee: $60.  Click here to register.
