Reporting an Absence

Attendance

When your child stays home ill, please notify the appropriate division each day they are absent and indicate any symptoms. You may notify us in any one of three ways — there’s no need to use more than one.

By Phone or Email

Infinite Campus

Use the Absence Request Portal in the Campus Parent app: after logging in, select More, then Absence Requests. Requests submitted through Infinite Campus are monitored until 9:00 AM each school day; after 9:00 AM, please contact your child’s division directly.

When to Keep a Sick Child Home

The following recommendations are a guide for deciding when to keep a sick child home, with the goal of promoting a healthy school environment by preventing the spread of illness.

During the School Day

If a Child Becomes Ill at School

A student who becomes ill during the school day must first visit the school nurse. The nurse will contact the parents, and together they’ll determine the necessary care. We do not allow older students to contact a parent directly to arrange to leave — the school nurse must be seen first.

When parents are called about an ill child, we ask that the child be picked up within one hour. Questions about these guidelines? Contact the Health Office at 763-258-2507.

Medication Policy

Medication at School

All Students

All medication must be kept in the Health Office during the school day; students may not carry medication on their person. All medications, prescription or over-the-counter, require both physician and parent signatures. EpiPens and albuterol inhalers may be self-carried by Middle and Upper School students when a medication authorization is on file; albuterol inhalers for Lower School students are kept in the Health Office. A signed authorization form is required to receive medication and must be submitted yearly.

Lower School

Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are provided and given to students only with verbal authorization from a parent or guardian at the time it is needed.

Middle & Upper School

Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are provided to students in grades 6–12 with a completed authorization form on file. The school nurse may not administer either medication without a signed form for the 2026–2027 school year.

Health Conditions

Asthma

Please submit an updated Asthma Action Plan (from your physician) and the Asthma Individual Health Plan each year. Students in grades 6–12 who self-carry albuterol must complete the Student Inhaler Agreement. If your physician hasn’t provided an Asthma Action Plan and your child may need albuterol or other asthma medication, please complete the medication authorization form.

Food Allergies

Please submit an updated Anaphylaxis Action Plan and Allergic Reaction Questionnaire each year. If your physician’s office has its own version of the Anaphylaxis Action Plan, that is acceptable.

Diabetes

Please submit an updated Treatment Authorization Form from your child’s physician each school year. A meeting with the school nurse will be arranged before the start of the year, and parents will complete a new Diabetic Emergency Plan annually.

Athletics

Sports Physicals

Students in grades 7–12 participating in Varsity Athletics must have a Sports Qualifying Physical form, completed by their physician, on file with the Upper School Office. Physicals are valid for three years from the date of the exam and are available on the MSHSL website and through most physicians’ offices. Submit completed forms to the Upper School Office.
