Mr. Josh Anderson, Director of Advancement

Mr. Anderson joined Providence Academy in 2015. His background includes experience in admissions, financial aid, development, and marketing in higher education and independent schools. As Director of Advancement he leads the Academy’s Admissions, Development, and Marketing departments, and is responsible for meeting institutional fundraising goals, building relationships with internal and external constituents interested in supporting Providence Academy's mission, and enrolling the next class of PA Lions in grades Pre-K through 12. Mr. Anderson holds a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership & Administration, as well as Bachelors Degrees in both Business Management and Psychology, all from the University of St. Thomas. He also has earned the certification of Certified Fund Raising Executive from CFRE International. Mr. Anderson is passionate about advancing the mission of Providence Academy and helping others use their Time, Talents, and Treasure to provide students with opportunities to grow in Faith, Knowledge, and Virtue.

 

Dr. Jeff Biebighauser, Upper School Latin & English Teacher

Dr. Jeff Olsen Biebighauser teaches Latin and English in the Upper School.  He holds a BA in Classics and Humanities from Valparaiso University and a MA and PhD in Philosophical Theology from the University of Nottingham.  He has been teaching at Providence since 2010.

Mr. Dominic Bissonette, Performing Arts Center Manager

Mr. Dominic Bissonette is the Performing Arts Center Manager and has been the Technical Director for all Providence Academy Music and Theater performances since 2007. He teaches wood-shop in the Middle and Upper schools. Mr. Bissonette holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Technical Theater from St. Cloud State University. Prior to Providence, he worked for the Children’s Museum, The Fargo-Moorhead Community Theater and at The Chanhassen Dinner Theater.

Dr. Yvonne Boldt, Biology Teacher

Dr. Boldt teaches Biology and facilitates science research opportunities for students at Providence Academy. She earned a doctoral degree in Microbiology from the University of Minnesota. She was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University and worked as a lead scientist for a biotechnology company, Incyte Genomics, in Sunnyvale, California. She has taught microbiology at the University of St. Thomas and the University of Minnesota. Additionally, Dr. Boldt is a member of the Society of Catholic Scientists. She brings special professional interests in contemporary questions of science and religion and completed a Duc In Altum Fellowship project on the integration of faith and science in the science classroom.

Mrs. Heidi Bowman, First Grade Teacher

Mrs. Bowman has been teaching at Providence Academy since we opened our doors in 2001. Mrs. Bowman currently teaches first grade at Providence but has also taught second grade and kindergarten. Her undergraduate degree in elementary education was received from St. Mary's University in Winona, Minnesota, and she has a master's degree in Curriculum and Design from St. Mary's University in Minneapolis. Mrs. Bowman has a great love for younger children and a broad commitment to education that includes international experience.

Mrs. Jenny Bruce, Dean of Admissions

Mrs. Bruce joins the Providence Academy Admissions department after a long career as a Realtor in the western suburbs of the Twin Cities. The experience of being a Providence Academy parent gives Mrs. Bruce both the parent perspective as well as an understanding of the student experience in all three divisions of Providence Academy. Prior to entering into real estate, Mrs. Bruce spent many years working in the nonprofit fundraising world and continues with many volunteer activities. She looks forward to introducing and welcoming new families to Providence Academy. Mrs. Bruce graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a Social Work degree and is an active member of St. Therese of Deephaven parish.

Mr. Larry Carlson, Coordinator of Transportation

Mr. Larry Carlson serves as the Transportation Coordinator, overseeing all aspects of transporting students to and from school, field trips, athletic events and extracurricular activities.  Mr. Larry comes from the Blake School in Hopkins, where he served as the Transportation Manager-Supervisor for the last 6 years. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Northwestern-St. Paul, and a Masters Degree in Trombone performance from the University of Minnesota.  He currently performs regularly with the Medalist Concert Band, the Westwind Swing Band, and the Lake Wobegon Brass Band.

Mrs. Colleen Carron, Physical Education

Mrs. Carron instructs a wide variety of ages in physical education. Mrs. Carron earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education from Mississippi State University. She has been at Providence since 2004. She has coached volleyball, softball and Middle School soccer during her tenure here. Currently she is the Chair for the PE Department and the coordinator for the Ski and Snowboard Club.

Mrs. Nicole Clark, Fifth Grade & Middle School Band Director

Mrs. Nicole Clark is a graduate with the highest honors from the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse with concentrations in both instrumental and vocal music. Her performance background includes recitals in alto saxophone, piano and voice. She brings to Providence Academy a diverse background of 26 years in music education. She has taught vocal music, music theory, general music, concert band, and marching band in Rice Lake, WI, Spring Grove, MN, Lake City, MN, and Providence Academy. In addition to teaching, she has served as a music director and cantor at the Newman Center Parish in La Crosse, and a cantor at Mary Queen of Peace, St. Anne's, St. Thomas, and St. Michael. Mrs. Clark directs the Cadet and Concert Bands at the academy, teaches individual band lessons, serves as the Upper School Choir Rehearsal Accompanist, and is the 7th Grade Team Leader for the 2023-2024 school year.

Mrs. Teresa Claypool serves as the Director of Middle School, overseeing the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. She has been a Catholic educator for 23 years. Since joining PA in 2010, Mrs. Claypool has taught religion and Middle and Upper School English, as well as a variety of other classes. She also served as the Middle School Dean of Students for five years and has coached girls' junior varsity softball and Middle School cross country. Mrs. Claypool received her Bachelor’s Degree in English Education from North Dakota State University, and her Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction and a Reading Licensure from the University of St. Thomas. She is currently a member of the Catholic School Leadership Program at the University of St. Thomas.

Mr. Brian Cosgriff, Physical Education

Coach Cos comes to Providence after having taught and coached in the Hopkins school district for the last 34 years. He has a B.A. in geography and sociology from Macalester college, physical education and coaching licensure from University of St. Thomas, and DAPE licensure from Mankato State. He has his Masters degree in education from St. Scholastica. While at Hopkins he guided the girl’s basketball team to seven state class AAAA championships. In 2019 he was voted the Max Preps National coach of the year. He was recently inducted into the Minnesota High school basketball Hall of Fame. He has a daughter Brooke who is a freshman at the University of Eau Claire.

Mrs. Annette Crider started at Providence Academy in the fall of 2015 and is the current 4th-8th grade learning specialist. She has a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Master of Education in Counseling. She has been an educator for over 25 years and it thankful to be a part of this amazing community.

Ms. Ashley Croteau teaches English literature, as well as 6th grade Writing in the Middle School. She brings to Providence Academy 7 years of experience in education. Prior to joining Providence, she taught English at Princeton Middle School in Princeton, Minnesota. Ms. Croteau received her Bachelor’s Degree in English Education from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, and her Master’s Degree in English Studies from St. Cloud State University.

Mrs. Karen Dierberger, Second Grade Teacher

Mrs. Karen Dierberger graduated from Creighton University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She began her teaching career with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Brownsville, Texas. Following her one-year service commitment, she taught second grade for seven years in Minneapolis. Mrs. Dierberger has a variety of teaching experiences, including co-founding and teaching in a preschool cooperative, facilitating adult creativity and journaling courses, substitute teaching across all grade levels (pre-K through high school), and working as a Reading Specialist for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. This will be her seventh year at Providence Academy.

I worked five years in the Fridley School District as an Interpreter and Substitute Spanish Teacher, and ten years teaching Spanish at Qué Tal.

Mr. Kevin Donohue teaches Spanish at Providence Academy. Spanish is his first language, and having taught at various grade levels, he brings a wide range of experience to PA. Mr. Donohue taught Theology at the University of St. Thomas. He also taught Spanish while serving as the principal of St. Columba. Mr. Donohue acquired his love for teaching while serving as a high school teacher in both Guadalupe Alternative Programs (GAP) and at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Mission High School in Belize, C.A.  He holds a master's in Divinity and a bachelor's from the University of Saint Thomas in St. Paul.

Mr. Brian Dudley, Third Grade Teacher

Mr. Brian Dudley teaches third grade at Providence Academy. Mr. Dudley holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a minor in coaching from the University of St. Thomas. He formerly taught first grade at a Catholic School in St. Paul and also coached basketball, softball, track and hockey. Mr. Dudley, who has taught 3rd grade at Providence since 2003 states "I was drawn by my love of God and country to the mission of Providence Academy. What a joy it is for me, at this poignant moment in our history, to walk with the children that I teach and assist them in becoming true saints and patriots!" Brian and his wife Amber have 6 children, and he considers family life his best preparation for teaching.

Mr. Duffy hails from Andover where he resides with his beautiful wife Alison and their 5 children (another coming soon! April 2021). Originally he grew up in Minnetonka, and attended mass at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Medina. Mr. Duffy had fond dreams of being a teacher, but the Lord called him to Youth Ministry for a time. He devoted 9 years to Youth Ministry, a majority of which were spent at the Church of the Epiphany in Coon Rapids where he and his family are still parishioners. Eventually God led him back to his first passion, teaching. He got his Masters in Teaching at Concordia University St. Paul and worked as a science teacher last year in the Osseo School District. He is now overjoyed and floored to be working at his dream school, Providence Academy!

Mrs. Gladys Estoista manages the financial and business aspects of Providence Academy. Prior to joining PA, Gladys gained extensive experience in accounting and business affairs, including with the non-profit organizations Bridge for Youth, Greater Twin Cities United Way, and Project for Pride in Living, Inc. Gladys earned an M.S. in Accounting from Colorado State University, and a B.S. in Accounting from Ateneo de Davao University, Philippines.

Mrs. Evens obtained her degree in education from St. Catherine’s University in Saint Paul, Minnesota and holds a master’s in education from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Mrs. Evens has more than 20 years of teaching experience at several elementary grades including kindergarten, first, and fourth grade here at Providence Academy. Her love for teaching is abundantly clear as soon as you step into her classroom.

Mrs. Marcia Farniok, Second Grade Teacher

Mrs. Marcia Farniok's passion for learning and love for younger children is evident in her commitment to education that includes international experience. Mrs. Farniok previously taught Kindergarten and first grade locally and also in Massachusetts. She has held workshops for elementary teachers to the Internally Displaced Persons’ camp of Gulu, Uganda, where she also taught in the Kindergarten classrooms. She also has four years of management experience in the hotel industry. Mrs. Farniok earned her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with a Nutrition Minor at the College of St. Benedict, her Master of Education at Boston College, and she is also a licensed Reading Specialist K-12.

Dr. Flanders has served as headmaster of Providence Academy since its inception in 2000. He holds a BA with a concentration in political philosophy from the University of Chicago, an MA in history from Truman State University, and a Ph.D. in theology from Boston College. He has taught history and theology in both college and high school, co-founded a residential college program and served as director of career services at Truman State, and was director of educational programming at the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty before coming to Providence. Dr. Flanders speaks on topics of education, religion, and the free society, currently serving as lecturer with the Acton University program and the Harry J Flynn Catechetical Institute.

Mrs. Susan Fobbe, Fourth Grade Teacher

Mrs. Fobbe has nearly two decades of teaching experience, primarily in the fourth through eighth grades. She has taught in the fourth and fifth grade during her time at Providence Academy. Mrs. Fobbe earned her degree in elementary education at St. Cloud State University with a minor in information media. Mrs. Fobbe currently serves as a fourth grade teacher and coordinator of fourth grade at Providence Academy. She strives to build relationships with her students as they share, study, and learn to love one another in Christ.

Mrs. Fogle received her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin - Madison.  Shortly after, she began teaching first grade at a local Catholic school.  In 2007 she came to work at Providence Academy. Mrs. Fogle earned her Masters Degree in Teaching and Learning at St. Mary's University. She is the Lower School Math Specialist, offers Middle School Support, and coaches the Cross Country Teams.

Mrs. Nancy Galgano serves as the Lower School Director, with responsibility for the operations of Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 5 including all Lower School Extended Day and Lower School After-School programs and activities. In addition, she serves as the senior administrator/director of spring break camp. Prior to this position, she taught second grade at Providence Academy. Mrs. Galgano holds a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of St. Catherine and a B.A. in Communications from Fordham University.  In addition to her teaching background, Mrs. Galgano has substantial experience in the areas of religious education, and educational leadership, including serving as president of a  pre-school in California and managing a group of professional corporate trainers for Citibank in New York.

Mr. Michael Gerads joined Providence Academy in 2019. He is a Mathematics Teacher and serves as the Mathematics Department Chair. He began his teaching career in 1994. He holds a B.A. in Secondary Mathematics Education from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and an M.A. in Teaching and Learning from St. Mary’s University in Winona. Mr. Gerads has also completed the Catechetical Institute Certificate through the Archdiocese, as well as the Catholic School Leadership Program through the St. Paul School of Divinity. Mr. Gerads is currently in formation to be a permanent deacon.

Mr. Goetz comes to us after spending the last 7 years teaching in a few local school districts. He also served as an Alternative Learning Center lead teacher. Mr. Goetz has spent all his time at the middle school level teaching many different history courses. He has also spent the last 5 years as Providence Academy’s Girls Basketball Head Coach.

Mrs. Amanda Gregory has been a member of the Providence Academy staff since we opened our doors in 2001. Mrs. Gregory currently serves in the Business Office as the Human Resources Manager. Mr. Guardia is a bestselling author and military historian. A US Army veteran, Mr. Guardia came to Providence after years of teaching at the college level in Texas and Minnesota. He holds a BA and MA in History from the University of Houston; and an MA in Education from the University of St. Thomas.

Mrs. Annie Heitzmann chairs the World Language Department and teaches French in the Academy's Middle & Upper Schools.  She holds a Bachelor of Arts in French and Education from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.  Before joining Providence Academy, Mrs. Heitzmann taught at South High School in Minneapolis, Middle School #51 in Park Slope, Brooklyn and Mahtomedi High School.  Mrs. Heitzmann’s teaching and curriculum is enhanced by her experiences studying abroad in Belgium, South Africa and throughout France, as well as her experience leading student travel abroad. Madame Heitzmann is working towards a master's degree in literacy at St. Thmoas University.

Mr. Edward Hester, Upper School History Teacher

Mr. Hester joined Providence Academy in 2006 and currently teaches history in the Upper School. In addition, Mr. Hester serves as one of the faculty leaders of the Upper School Community System. Mr. Hester holds a BA in theology from Christendom College and an MA in theology from Holy Apostles College. Mr. Hester has over twenty years of teaching experience in Catholic schools, as well as experience in industrial purchasing and restaurant management. Mr. Hester is proud to be a veteran of the US Army Reserves, obtaining an honorable discharge in 1997.

Ms. Hettwer teaches science in the Middle School. After graduating from the University of North Dakota with a B.S. in middle level and elementary education, she taught for two years at a Catholic elementary school in Grand Forks, ND. Furthering her faith is at the forefront of Ms. Hettwer’s life along with her passion for teaching middle schoolers. She is beyond excited to help her students see the intentional connections between science and the Catholic faith.

Mrs. Hickert teaches 3rd grade at Providence Academy. She began her teaching career in Kansas City, Missouri, and is thrilled to be back home to Minnesota. Betsy holds a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Northwest Missouri State University and a Bachelors Degree from Rockhurst University in Kansas City. Mrs. Hickert completed the majority of her schooling at Catholic institutions and carries on the tradition by sharing her faith and love of God with her students.

Dr. Arthur Hippler, Upper School Religion Teacher

Dr. Arthur Hippler is Chairman of the Religion Department at Providence Academy, where he has taught since 2006. He also teaches as an adjunct professor in St. Paul School of Divinity at the University of St. Thomas and as an instructor in the Harry Flynn Catechetical Institute for the Archdiocese of St. Paul-Minneapolis. A graduate of Thomas Aquinas College in California, he received his Doctorate in Philosophy from Boston College. He is the author of four books, two on Catholic social teaching and two iBooks on C. S. Lewis. He is married with five children.

Mrs. Sarah Hogan, Director of College Counseling and Alumni Engagement

Mrs. Sarah Hogan has worked in both secondary and post-secondary education for 25 years, 15 of those at Providence Academy, presently as Director of College Counseling and Alumni Engagement. Mrs. Hogan has experience both overseeing PK-12 enrollment management and outreach efforts, as well as comprehensive college counseling and student support programs. Among these include implementation of a peer-led tutoring program, a college application workshop for rising seniors, as well as a yearly College Day event for students and families.

Prior to her years at Providence, Mrs. Hogan served as Director of Alumni Relations and as Associate Director of Admission and Financial Aid at the University of Dallas. A long-standing member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), Mrs. Hogan joined NACAC’s Affiliate Presidents Council as MACAC President, following her second term on the MACAC Board of Directors as a Co-Chair of the Minnesota National College Fair. Mrs. Hogan recently completed terms of service with the inaugural Naviance Advisory Board and the counselor advisory board for a Big 10 university. She has additionally co-chaired a statewide Naviance User Group initiative through partnership with the Minnesota Office of Higher Education.

Mrs. Hogan is a graduate of the University of Dallas, where she completed her bachelor’s in English and graduate work in Education and Business Administration.

Mrs. Amy Hohenecker, 4th Grade Teacher

Mrs. Hohenecker received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Physical Education from Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD.  Her teaching career began in South Dakota teaching students in grades 3-5.  She then relocated to the Twin Cities where she taught fourth grade at a local Catholic elementary school.  In 2003, Mrs. Hohenecker obtained a master's degree in education from Hamline University in St. Paul, MN.

She came to Providence Academy in 2013 and teaches fourth grade. Mrs. Hohenecker is also the Head Track & Field Coach at Providence Academy.

Mrs. Barbara Hunter, Middle School Mathematics Teacher

Mrs. Barbara Hunter has spent the past twenty years committed to Catholic education in Illinois. She joins us as a Middle School math teacher at Providence Academy. Mrs. Hunter holds a B.A. from the University of Illinois as well as a Master’s Degree in Education from Dominican University. She looks forward to bringing her experience with Middle School students to Providence Academy.

Mrs. Danette Jaeger, Lower School Assistant Director

Mrs. Danette Jaeger has been a teacher at Providence Academy since 2014. She graduated from St. Cloud State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education.  Prior to coming to Providence she spent ten years teaching a variety of grade levels at area Catholic Schools. Mrs. Jaeger has been a part of the Providence Academy community, serving as the Lower School Extended-Day Coordinator since 2003.

Mr. Kurt Jaeger, Director of the Upper School

Mr. Jaeger was a founding faculty member at Providence, and has taught in every academic division here. For 13 years he was PA’s Athletics Director, working closely with every constituency of our Upper School. As a key member of PA’s senior administrative team, he collaborated on matters affecting every aspect of school life. Mr. Jaeger has spent the past few years both in industry and preparing for further roles in educational leadership, earning his Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and pursuing principal licensure that will be complete this fall.

Mr. Jonathon Janz, Upper School Religion Teacher

Mr. Jonathon Janz is an instructor in the religion department in the upper school. He has worked in both the religion and science departments for the middle school as well. Mr. Janz earned a Master of Arts in Catholic Studies from the University of St. Thomas, a Master of Science in Exercise and Sport Science from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He has also completed coursework in doctoral-level programs for kinesiology and physical therapy, and has over a decade of experience in both teaching as well as training collegiate, professional, and Olympic athletes. He also has experience as an instructor, adviser, lecturer, consultant, and research assistant for various universities and private organizations. Mr. Janz is an Instituted Acolyte and helps to coordinate many liturgical functions at Providence Academy. He is also the ministry leader for altar servers at the Cathedral of St. Paul and serves as a master of ceremonies for major liturgical events in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

Mrs. Angela Jendro, Religion Teacher

Mrs. Angela Jendro teaches Religion in the Upper School and is part of the US Student Spiritual Support Team where she hosts the Fellowship room, discussions, bible studies, and more. She holds a Master's Degree in Catholic Studies from the University of St. Thomas and Bachelor Degrees in Theology, Philosophy, and Catholic Studies from the University of St. Thomas as well. In addition to teaching in the school setting, Angela has a long history of teaching in parishes both as a speaker for adults and as an instructor for Confirmation preparation. She has a deep appreciation for the gift of our Catholic faith, and loves the opportunity to share the joy of the Gospel with students.

Mrs. Adrienne Johnson, Kindergarten & First Grade Music Teacher

Mrs. Adrienne Stankey-Johnson has been teaching in the archdiocese for 20 years as a K-8 Music Specialist. She considers herself a playwright and has written and produced many plays. Mrs. Johnson was nominated for an educator Grammy for her plays, The Annunciation of Mary, It’s a Beautiful Day at JohnPaul 2 School, and most recently, Meet the Beatles, the last theatrical production at St. Mark's School. She has a bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota and a master's degree from Juilliard in Piano Performance. Mr. Thomas Jones, Upper School Band

Mr. Jones directs the Upper School Symphonic Band, provides all Upper School wind and percussion lessons, and teaches Beginning Studio Band. He also teaches lessons for many of our 5th grade beginning band students. Prior to coming to PA in 2012, Mr. Jones taught instrumental music in Southern California for eight years where he led wind bands at all levels in grades 7-12. During this time, he taught competitive field marching band, studio rock band, and music history. In addition, he served as a guest clinician and adjudicator for regional band festivals at the middle school level and chaired regional high school honor bands. He has performed as a member of The Bakersfield Winds, a guest performer with the Bakersfield Youth Symphony, and he currently performs at churches around the metro area as a guest trombonist. Mr. Jones holds a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from St. John’s University where he graduated with honors.

Kevin Keiser taught Latin and history for four years at St. Cecilia Academy in Nashville, TN, before coming to Providence Academy in 2013.  He has also taught theology at Aquinas College and in the permanent diaconate formation program for the diocese of Nashville.  He holds a Masters in Thomistic Studies, and a doctorate in Moral Theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas in Rome, Italy.  Kevin’s favorite historical topics include the Assyrians, Achaemenid Persia, the Roman principate, paleoChristianity, the expansion of Islam, the rise of the Normans, the Gregorian Reform, the Crusades, and the 14th century. At Providence Academy, Kevin teaches the history of Western Civilization and Senior Religion (Reason and Revelation).

Mr. Kenney is the school's Assistant Athletic Director. His main duties consist of overseeing Middle School athletics, clubs and activities, and assisting with game management. Mrs. Melissa Krcil has served as the Lower School Learning and Reading Specialist since 2012. As a founding member of the PA faculty, Mrs. Krcil taught third grade and was also the coordinator of that grade until 2009. From 2009 to 2012, she was a substitute teacher at Providence while spending most of her time at home caring for her young children. Mrs. Krcil holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education grades one through six, with an emphasis in Special Education and a Master of Education degree from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. In 2016, she completed a Master of Arts in Reading (K-12) program through the University of St. Thomas. As an experienced educator, her strengths lie in respecting and teaching each child as an individual soul and creating a positive learning environment through solid curriculum, discipline, and compassion. She brings a strong sense of mission and vision to Providence Academy.

Ms. Angie Mahoney, French Teacher

Mrs. Angie Mahoney teaches French in Providence Academy’s Middle & Upper Schools.  She holds a Bachelor of Arts in French from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota.  Mrs. Mahoney’s teaching and curriculum is enhanced by her experiences studying abroad in France.  Before joining Providence Academy, Mrs. Mahoney worked at St. Michael Catholic School in St. Michael, Minnesota.  In addition to teaching French, Mrs. Mahoney is also a Substitute Teacher and Assistant Track Coach at Providence Academy.

Anne studied at the Franciscan University of Steubenville where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Catechetics and Theology, as well as her Master of Arts degree in Theology and Christian Ministry. Mr. Messmore has been with Providence Academy since the Spring of 2017. He serves as the Director of Athletics and Activities and also coaches boy's hockey. Mr. Messmore holds his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education (K-12) form North Dakota State University and a Master of Education in Sports Administration from the University of Minnesota. Mr. Messmore is a member of the executive committee for Region 4 with the MN State HS League and was appointed AD of the year by his peers in 2022-2023.

Matthew Miller, ATC, is the lead athletic trainer at Providence Academy. Matthew earned his undergraduate and master degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He provides immediate, on-field care to all athletes during games then helps guide rehabilitation in the case of injury. He creates return-to-play plans, and helps athletes have an injury-free season. Through a partnership with Allina Health Orthopedics, Providence Academy athletes are given priority at clinics in West Health, Edina, and Minneapolis in the event he or she needs to be seen by an orthopedic specialist.

Dr. Mrugala has been a school teacher for the last 13 years. Prior to teaching, he earned a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering and Master of Science in Manufacturing Systems from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Mrugala worked in medical and military product development projects in the Twin Cities for about 15 years before moving to Alaska, where he earned a Master of Art in Teaching from the University of Alaska-Anchorage. He earned his Doctor of Education in Teaching and Learning from Argosy University and spent 7 years teaching middle school math in Alaska before moving to Wichita, Kansas, where he taught high school math for 6 years. Dr. Mrugala is very excited to have recently come full circle, moving back to Minnesota after being away for 20 years.

Mrs. Jaime Myrold has just recently joined Providence Academy this year and currently teaches Algebra 1 in Middle and Upper School. She holds a Master’s degree from the University of Minnesota in Education and a Master’s degree from Azusa Pacific in Administration. Mrs. Myrold lived in California for 11 years teaching middle school and high school classes including physical science, a variety of Algebra courses and Geometry. She currently lives in Maple Grove with her husband and two children.

Mr. Mike Olson currently teaches 8th Grade English, Public Speaking, and Film Studies.  He is a founding faculty member at Providence. From 2001-2003, he served as the school’s founding Athletics Administrator and he co-developed both the Middle School and High School English Curriculum. Mr. Olson has coached a variety of boys and girls basketball and tennis teams at PA over the years, and was honored in both 2008 and 2009 as MSHSL Section 5 A “Boys Tennis Coach of the Year”.  He has served as Dean of Students (2002), English Department Coordinator (2003), and founded the Student Council at PA.  He has taught multiple High School and Middle School courses at PA including Phy. Ed, Health, New Testament, Old Testament, Moral Theology, American Literature, and British Literature.  All four of his children attend PA.  Mr. Olson holds a B.A. in English from the University of St. Thomas, and an M.Ed. from the University of Notre Dame, having served in the Alliance for Catholic Education from 1999-2001.

Kaitlin is a graduate from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, where she studied Latin Education and Classical Studies. She has studied Latin and ancient Greek. Mr. Michael Plucinski came to Providence Academy in 2012 after teaching Physics and Physical Science for 5 years in Fairmont, MN. A proud faculty member of the Science Department, Mr. Plucinski teaches Physics, Engineering, and Computer Science at PA and also serves as the lead mentor for PA’s FIRST Robotics and FIRST Tech Challenge robotics teams. Mr. Plucinski is a graduate of St. John’s University where he earned a B.A. in Natural Science, with concentrations in Physics and Mathematics, as well as a minor in Secondary Education.  He has also earned a graduate certificate in Engineering Education from the University of St. Thomas.  In addition, Mr. Plucinski is a Fellow with the physics teacher professional development organization QuarkNet, where he helps develop particle physics based activities for the high school physics classroom and leads physics teacher workshops across the country.  He also is a Teaching Specialist with the University of Minnesota’s College in the Schools program, Physics 1101W cohort.

Mrs.Ramirez teaches Spanish to Upper School students at Providence. She started working at Providence in the 2015-2016-school year. She came to Providence Academy from Rockford School District where she taught Spanish I and Spanish Cultures to the Middle school students and Spanish I and IV at the High School for five years. She also worked as the Diversity Coordinator for the district. Prior to that, she had also taught Spanish K-8 for 14 years at St.Stephen’s School in Anoka. She is originally from Costa Rica and has lived in Nebraska and Minnesota for about 33 years. Sra.Ramírez holds a bachelor’s degree in Kindergarten Education from the University of Costa Rica, a master’s degree in Emotional/Behavioral Disorders from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and holds a Spanish k-12 Spanish teaching license from Bethel University in Minnesota. She is very passionate in teaching Spanish and loves to share her Hispanic culture with the students.

Mrs. Reopelle initially came to Providence Academy in 2001 as a fifth-grade teacher. She also worked a few years creating a Campus Ministry department and taught Middle School and ninth-grade religion courses. Mrs. Reopelle holds a B.A. from the University of St. Thomas. Her previous experience includes teaching math and science in seventh through twelfth grades and coaching cross country. Mrs. Reopelle has a love of learning in all subject areas but is most passionate about theology and science. One of her favorite things about teaching for the last 25 years is seeing students make connections between the different branches of knowledge, which truly bear on one another and bring students "to an understanding of the infinite wisdom and goodness which the Creator has displayed in all His works." Mr. Darren Rousar, Middle School & Upper School Art Teacher

Mr. Rousar brings over 25 years of experience teaching fine art to Providence Academy. He has previously served as assistant director and an instructor at Charles Cecil Studios in Florence, Italy and vice president of The Minnesota River School of Fine Art in Burnsville.  During his tenure at The Minnesota River School, he also served as an instructor and led art-based tours of Italy, England and Spain. He attended Atelier Lack and Atelier LeSueur, both in Minnesota, as well as Studio Cecil-Graves in Florence, Italy. He has been a practicing professional artist for more than 35 years, focusing mainly on Christian themes. He is the author of six books about traditional art instruction. Mr. Rousar teaches art at Providence Academy.

Mr. Christopher Santer is an award-winning artist with an extensive professional exhibition and commission record. His original paintings and drawings have been included in a variety of gallery and museum exhibitions across the country. Prints of his saints portraits and sacred artworks hang in all 50 of the United States, and in 12 foreign countries, and he continues to add new works to his website, pacemstudio.com, every year. Some honors include the McKnight Foundation Fellowship for Visual Artists for 2004, and a featured profile in the national publication, New American Paintings, Volume 47. He taught studio art classes at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, where he received a Master of Fine Arts in painting. His undergraduate degree in commercial design and illustration was completed at the University of Dayton, in Ohio. He has additional experience working with young people through four years of service with NET Ministries of West St. Paul, and through his work for the Minnesota Historical Society at the State Capitol. Mr. Santer teaches art for portions of the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools.

Mr. Adam C. Schmalzbauer serves as the Chairman of the English Department at Providence Academy, teaching Upper School English. Responsible for instructing all Providence Academy seniors in the Senior English Seminar, Mr. Schmalzbauer will be teaching Literature to underclassmen , again this school year, as well . In addition to mentoring students through Providence Academy's Poetry Club, Mr. Schmalzbauer is proud to serve as Advisor to PA's Chapter of the National Honor Society. Mr. Schmalzbauer is an alumnus of Saint John’s University (MN), where he minored in Spanish literature while earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in Collegeville, before gaining his Bachelor of Science degree in English Teaching from Winona State University. Mr. Schmalzbauer, who came to Providence from Rochester Lourdes High School, holds the distinction of being a professional writer, having published a series of sports history books for students.

Mrs. Emily Semsch is the Lower and Middle School Counselor. She assists students and their families with academic, personal/social concerns, and is the liaison with community mental health professionals. Mrs. Semsch is available for students meetings as well as parent consultation. Mrs. Semsch's Bachelor's degree is from Saint Mary's University and her Master's is from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Mrs. Semsch maintains a K-12 School Counseling license with the state of Minnesota and multiple professional affiliations including the American School Counselor's Association, and the Minnesota Association of Children's Mental Health.

Mrs. Sheehan came to Providence Academy in 2002 with twenty-four years of experience as a Medical Technologist and several years teaching experience at area Catholic schools. Mrs. Simmons began teaching Speech and Theater classes at PA during the 2002-2003 school year. After producing almost 100 shows at Providence during her 20 years as PA's Theatre Director, she moved into a new role. Mrs. Simmons joined the MS Learning Support Team during the 2020-2021 school year before becoming the US Learning Specialist in the fall of 2021. Mrs. Simmons received a Bachelor's Degree in Theater from North Central University and a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a specified focus on Differentiation and Assessments from the University of St. Thomas.

Mrs. Connie Simons teaches Kindergarten at Providence Academy.  Mrs. Simons has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Quincy University. She also possesses a seasoned child/classroom perspective, derived from many years of experience as a teacher in a Catholic school setting.  She is a subject matter expert in the teaching of phonics, and was recognized in the 1995 archdiocese’s Outstanding Catholic School Teacher Award recognition program. Mrs. Simons has a reputation for creatively incorporating Catholicity in lesson plans and her efforts have been featured in several community and archdiocese publications. Mrs. Simons serves as the Kindergarten Coordinator.

Mrs. Simonson joined Providence Academy in 2005 after a one-year long term substitute position at Holy Family Catholic High School. In 2003 she received a Bachelor's degree in English with a minor in Communications from Saint Mary's University. She remained at the university the subsequent year to earn her Master's in Education. As one of the university's Remick Scholarship recipients, she is dedicated to Catholic education. She is a member of the PA English department with experience teaching a wide variety of classes within the department's middle and upper schools. She is also the coach of the PA Speech Team.

At PA, he has taught US I & II, Debate I & II, European History, and the Ancient and Medieval Worlds courses. Mrs. Robyn Steinbrueck is teaching first grade at Providence Academy. She has more than 30 years of experience, teaching a variety of elementary grade levels including Kindergarten, third, fourth and fifth grade. Mrs. Steinbrueck is a native of the Chicago area, but moved to Minnesota to earn her bachelor’s degree from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul. In addition to teaching, she also serves as one of the Curriculum Coordinators in the Lower School as well as the Coordinator of Teacher Licensure.  Mrs. Steinbrueck is an avid runner having completed numerous half and full marathons.

Mr. Subialka has been teaching Physical Education at Providence Academy since 2002. The majority of his thirty-five teaching career has been spent teaching Physical Education to Kindergarten through eighth grade students, as well as coaching various sports. Mr. Subialka states, "I believe physical education should give students a wide range of activities, helping them to explore and to challenge themselves. There aren't too many things better than to conquer a physical task which you once thought impossible." Mr. Subialka earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from St. Cloud State University and has spent his entire teaching career in catholic schools around the Twin Cities area.

Mr. Tiffany serves as Director of Academics and Curriculum, is conducting the Academy's accreditation process, and teaches College-in-the-Schools Latin. In prior years at the Academy, he taught College-in-the-Schools Ancient Greek, Debate, Photography, Publications, Industrial Art, engineering, science, and Studio Art I-IV. He also takes Latin students to Italy for two weeks every two years. He is accomplished in art, industrial design and drafting, classics, literature, speech, rhetoric, journalism, and computers. He holds degrees in English and Ancient Greek, from the University of Minnesota, and has completed all doctorial studies and exams in the Classics. Miss Tillotson is the Theater Director and Drama Teacher at Providence Academy. She holds a Bachelors in Music Performance with an emphasis in Opera performance from the University of Northwestern – St Paul, as well as degrees in Biblical Studies and Multimedia Communications. Prior to coming to Providence Academy, she had been privileged to perform throughout Minnesota, nationally, and internationally, as well as teach privately and with various organizations, including Minnesota Opera.

Mrs. Underwood holds a BS degree in Elementary Education from St. Cloud State University and a Masters’s degree in Educational Administration and Leadership also from St. Cloud State University. While at St. Cloud State, Mrs. Underwood participated in and coached the University’s varsity softball program. Mrs. Underwood serves as the Assistant Activities Director and the Middle School Athletic Director.

Mrs. Felicia Villafan, Fourth and Fifth Grade Technology Teacher

Mrs. Villafan teaches the 4th and 5th grade technology classes at Providence Academy. She taught 3rd grade for four years prior to joining the Providence community in 2019 . Her favorite topics to teach in class include elementary robotics and Google Docs.

Mr. John Wagner, Head Custodian

Mr. John Wagner presently serves as the Head Custodian at Providence Academy. John began his service to the Academy while the facility was being built in 2001, acting as custodian to the construction crew and watching and learning as the facility was being built. Additionally, he has served as the public address announcer and site manager for all Providence Academy indoor athletic events since 2003. Before coming to Providence, Mr Wagner served as Head Custodian at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and School in Robbinsdale since 1992.

 

Mrs. Hannah Wegner, Middle School History Teacher

Mrs. Hannah Wegner first joined Providence Academy in 2019 as a long-term substitute teacher for our sixth and seventh grade history classes. Mrs. Wegner is licensed in Minnesota as a History and Government teacher, and has classroom experience teaching many subjects such as Religion, English, and Health. She has also coordinated the Catholic youth program and Airman ministries at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, and served in other child and youth programs. Mrs. Wegner holds a degree with highest honors in Adolescent Education from the University of Wisconsin—La Crosse.

Mrs. Rebecca Welch, Fifth Grade Teacher

Mrs. Rebecca Welch has been teaching in the primary grades at Providence Academy since 2003. She currently teaches fifth grade and also serves as a Lower School Curriculum Coordinator. Mrs. Welch grew up in Sioux Falls, S.D. and earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from St. Cloud State University.

Miss Wessels is an alumna of Providence Academy (’13) who is proud to be rejoining the PA family as the Middle and Upper School Choir Director. Following her time at Providence, Miss Wessels continued on to James Madison University where she received a Bachelor of Arts in History, and a Bachelor of Music – with concentrations in K-12 General Music Education and Voice. In her time at James Madison, Miss Wessels was a student of Dr. John Little, she served as an ensemble manager for The Madison Singers and The James Madison University Chorale under the direction of Dr. Joanne Van der Vat Chromy, and was a choral conducting teaching assistant for Dr. Bryce Hayes. She also previously studied voice with Oksana Bryn at MacPhail Center for Music. Miss Wessels has been teaching since 2018, working with students ages 4-18. She loves music exploration as a means to create, to connect interpersonally with others, to study cross curricularly, and above all else to make a joyful noise to the Lord. Music is a gift that has the power to connect people in ways only God could intend, and for that reason alone Miss Wessels believes we must engage in the art.

Mrs. Wiederholt is the Providence Academy Lower School Librarian. After a successful career in corporate technology and brand management, and while raising four daughters, Mrs. Wiederholt rediscovered the immeasurable value and pure joy of Catholic school libraries. She has been serving in local Catholic school libraries ever since. For almost fifteen years as both a dedicated volunteer and lead librarian, she has been putting her technical skills to use while employing her creativity and love of literature to engage young minds and hearts.

Mrs. Maureen Woeltge is a music specialist for second through fifth grade students and has taught music at Providence Academy since 2011. She has a BA in K-12 Vocal and Classroom Music and a masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in differentiation from the University of St Thomas in St. Paul. Mrs. Woeltge has been teaching music since 2008. She loves seeing her students grow as music appreciators and as expert music makers throughout the year. It is the joy of music that fuels each workday and it is prevalent in her classroom. The connections students make between themselves and the world around them through the medium of music provides an extremely satisfying sense of accomplishment for students in her classroom. Mrs. Woeltge also loves the outdoors, movies, and most of all, her husband and her son. She is in an Irish band with her family, who play throughout the Twin Cities area.

Mr. Andrew Wolf joined the Providence Academy community ahead of the 2022-23 school year. He currently serves PA as a College Counselor and Academic Advisor. Prior to coming to Providence, Mr. Wolf worked as a Twin Cities-based admission counselor for his alma mater, North Dakota State University. It was there that he discovered his passion for serving students as they traverse the college search process.

Mrs. Beth Wolfe, String Orchestra Director

Mrs. Beth Wolfe is the Strings Program Director and teaches a music appreciation class which is one of the elective offerings of our Middle School. She has been a professional performing artist and teacher in the Twin Cities for the last 50 years, teaching in the Minneapolis Schools summer program, Breck School, Macalester College, Eden Prairie String Academy, and MacPhail Center for the performing arts. Mrs. Wolfe is a founding artistic director of two conductorless Philomusica Chamber Orchestra, a String Quartet and has performed with all of the professional groups in the Twin Cities.

Mr. Chris Wrede, Middle School History Teacher

Mr. Wrede has taught at Providence Academy for the past 20 years in many capacities. He currently teaches Middle School history to our 6th and 7th graders. He received his BA in Elementary Education from the University of Minnesota - Duluth and completed his masters program throught the University of St. Thomas.
