A review of the past week in Providence Academy Athletics.

Boys Hockey:

The Boys Hockey team is 14-9-3.

On Friday, February 23, the Lions took on the Minneapolis co-op in the Section 2A tournament play at the Parade Ice Gardens. The Lions fell to MPLS 7-1.

This concludes the 2017-18 Boys Hockey season. Congratulations to all who represented Providence Academy so well.

Girls Basketball:

The Girls Basketball team is 15-11.

On Friday, February 23, the Lions hosted Orono and topped the Spartans 66-45. Junior Maggie Murphy led the way for PA with 26 points and 11 rebounds, senior Anna Counts contributed 17 points, 16 boards, and seven assists, while sophomores Maddie Anderson, Hailey Hohenecker, and Lauren Kettler added eight, seven, and six points, respectively.

On Thursday, March 1, the Lions hosted The Blake School to begin Section 5AA tournament play. The Lions fell to the Bears 39-34 and concluded their season. Senior Anna Counts led all scorers with 18 points, and fellow senior Jamie Trende finished up her career with a five-point night.

This concludes the 2017-18 Girls basketball season. Congratulations all who represented Providence Academy so well.

Boys Basketball:

The Boys Basketball team is 11-13.

On Saturday, February 24 the Lions hosted Cristo Rey Jesuit High School and topped the Panthers 84-66. Junior Logan Blomberg led PA with 22 points followed by juniors Dylan Servais and Mark Richelsen with 16 points each.

On Tuesday, February 27, the Lions traveled to Southwest Christian and fell by a score of 47-44. Richelsen laid in 15 for the Lions while Blomberg added 11.

Next up: Today, the Lions will host Spectrum High School in their last regular season game scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. varsity tip-off.

Boys Swim and Dive:

This Boys Swim and Dive team has concluded its 2017-18 season. Congratulations sophomore Adam Huser and eighth grader Nick Fogle who represented Providence Academy so well.


Tommy Wehmann: We believe that the academics, arts, and athletics are integral in the formation of students. Tommy Wehmann is a great example of someone who’s excelled in each of these areas, so much so that he caught the eye of @ccxnews and was featured as a “Standout Student.”  View here.

Maureen Burns: Providence Academy is proud to announce our 2018 Athena Award winner, Maureen Burns. The Athena goes to the top female athlete in the Class of 2018. She will be honored at the Athena Awards Banquet on Friday, May 4. The administration, teachers, and coaches of Providence Academy are proud of all her accomplishments and believe she represents PA with true Lions’ Pride.

Limited Dome Hours on March 10:

Providence Academy will be hosting a Minnesota State High School League Lacrosse Officials Clinic on Saturday, March 10. As a result, the PA community time will run only from 8:00-10:00 a.m. 

Dome hours have updated due to the beginning of spring sports captains’ practices. The current schedule may be located here. If you have any questions, please contact Assistant Athletic Director Mr. Daren Messmore.

Invitation to Elm Creek for Lessons and Fun with the Nordic Ski Team:

All PA students, families, teachers, and staff are invited for a fun snow day with the Nordic Ski team on Sunday, March 4 at Elm Creek Park Reserve. Thanks to Elm Creek Park Reserve, PA guests can enjoy a free day pass, a free 1.5 hour group lesson on the basics of skate skiing from Elm Creek’s instructor Maria, and a reduced rate of $5 per person for Nordic classic skis and $9 per person for Nordic skate ski rental; simply RSVP by calling or texting Kathleen Tschacher at 612-369-0668.

Nordic Ski team members will meet guests in the chalet at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, to help get them set up with skis and head out to the training area. In addition to lessons from Maria, Nordic team athletes and coaches will be on hand to help teach as well. And for those who wish for an extra dose of fun, they can participate in the relay race, too!
