A Review of the Past Week in Providence Academy Athletics

PA Athlete Spotlight: Senior Kate Allerheligen

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) has identified Kate Allerheiligen as an elite high school senior that will be recognized on the 2020 Under Armour All-America Watch List. This qualifies Kate to be considered to be a 2020 Under Armour High School All-American. In November, AVCA will announce 72 athletes, with the first 24 being awarded First Team. Kate has been an integral member of the Providence Academy volleyball program. She is the returning varsity captain and starting libero, leading the team with determination, grit, and perseverance. Congratulations Kate! We can’t wait to watch you play your senior year season this spring and see where your collegiate volleyball career takes you.

Girls Soccer

The Providence Academy Girls Soccer Team had a busy week hosting Mound Westonka on Tuesday and Saint Paul Academy on Thursday!

The lady lions were victorious over the Mound Westonka Whitehawks, winning 4-3. Freshmen, Avery Lampe, netted her first high school career goal and assist in the first half! But Lampe was not done yet, serving up a corner kick in the 2nd half that put the pressure on the Whitehawks and caused an own goal. Lampe also slid the game winning goal by the Westonka goalkeeper. Senior, Sofia Caballero, also had a stand out performance netting herself a header goal in the first half along with assisting Lampe’s two goals. Newcomer to the program and goal keeping, Junior, Grace Counts finished the night with 18 saves. “Our girls never gave up. Everytime the other team leveled the score our girls dug in and found a way to to keep pushing and scoring” – Head Coach, Paul Cronin.

The ladies recovered on Wednesday and used the rainy weather to hit the classroom for film analysis in preparation for their conference face off against Saint Paul Academy.

Thursday’s conference face off yielded another win for the Lions as they topped Saint Paul Academy 2-1. Thursday was also Senior night and the Lions honored their senior captains, Anna Sanchez and Sofia Caballero. Both seniors had great games with Anna Sanchez holding down the back line and holding SPA to only 1 goal. Sofia Caballero put in work up top and claimed both goals for the night. One off a corner kick from Freshmen, Avery Lampe, making that the third corner kick PA has converted from Lampe. Other stand out of the nights were Freshmen, Inga Nelson, with a lights out performance in the center of the field, and Junior, Mary Rillens Lee, shut down any attacks down the flanks.

The lions have a week of training in preparation for another conference face off against Minnehaha Academy on Thursday, September 17th.

Boys Soccer

Thursday, Sept. 3 the Lions  posted a solid win against conference rivals Minnehaha Academy. The Lions received goal productions from Sam Schroeder, Matt Wooden and JP Luedke.

Tuesday, Sept. 8 the Lions traveled to the #5 ranked team in the state, The Blake School. The boys battled in the first half to keep the score 0-2. Midway through the 2nd half, the Lions gave up the 3rd goal and it seemed like the wind had left the sail. Shortly after the 3rd goal, The Blake Bears tallied the 4th goal of the game. The Blake Bears defeated the Lions 9-0. Sophomore Goalkeeper Ben Martin faced 29 shots. Coach Lev stated, “The boys really played good soccer tonight. The scoreboard does not do justice on how well we played as a team. We had some really good chances. The team played well enough to keep right up with one of the best teams in the state. We had some unfortunate bounces and the last quarter of the game got away from us.”

The Boys JV team is undefeated and have won decisively with solid possession and beautiful goals.

The coaching staff is really excited to see the increased number of participation at the Middle School level. We have 16 fifth graders out for soccer this fall. This is FANTASTIC! The future of Lions soccer is very bright!

The Lions host The Breck School Mustangs on Tuesday, September 15.

New Program: Providence MS Travel Basketball

PA Athletics would like to introduce a PA basketball traveling program. The PA Travel program is designed to give 6th-8th grade kids who attend Providence Academy, an opportunity to play against stronger competition. These athletes will play in a total of 8-tournaments (mainly weekend tournaments and 3 one-day Supersavers). It is expected that participation on a Travel team will be the player’s primary extracurricular activity during the travel season. The travel season will begin with a tryout and placement on a team in September.  Practices will begin 2nd week of October with Tournament play starting early November. The season will begin in mid-October when practices begin; ending by the second weekend of March with the Minnesota Grade State tournament. At no time can a player play on an additional MYAS competing team (i.e. A community-based program) during the Providence Academy basketball season.

Participating in travel basketball is a privilege requiring a significant time commitment from the player and their family. If participants are unable to make that commitment, they should not participate in the travel program.
