Located on the main level, classes often cozy up by the fireplace, and it makes a wonderful study/socializing area for Middle and Upper School students to utilize before and after school. The Great Room is located on the Academy's Lower level and opens to a main floor balcony. Students eat lunch in the Great Room, and its stage serves as the Academy's theater for all choir and band concerts, plays and Open Houses. The Gallery is located immediately outside of the Chapel, on the upper level of the Academy. The Gallery houses antiquities from four different Ancient Empires: Greece, Rome, Mesopotamia and Egypt. The Gallery also serves as a meeting place for various speakers and school activities throughout the school year. The Chapel is located on the upper level of the Academy. Students attend Catholic Mass weekly, in addition to religious instruction in the classroom. A variety of other activities, including Reconciliation, Eucharistic Adoration, Stations of the Cross and Advent Prayer Services also take place throughout the year. The Lower School Library is a great place to curl up with a good book, or work quietly on homework. Lower School classes attend library once a week for story time with the librarian and a chance to check out a book. Middle and Upper school students sometimes attend study hall in the library or spend time there working on class projects. The library also has several computers complete with the library's card catalog, Internet access and access to several academic databases. The Computer Lab is located on the Academy's upper level. Students work on Dell computers during study halls and several Middle or Upper School electives, including Word Processing, and Principles of Finance and Economics. Photography and Publications students have access to Apple computers and design software. The Academy also has a wireless, portable lab that teachers can bring directly into the classroom. Hear a lecture about art history or work on your own creations in the Academy's Lower and Middle School Art Room. Located on the Academy's upper level, the Art Room has several tall windows to allow for plenty of natural light. The Family and Consumer Sciences Room introduces students to both textiles and foods. Students will also focus on basic nutrition while cooking. The Academy's main Gym is the home of Lion athletics. Volleyball and basketball teams practice and play games here, and the majority of the Academy's gym classes are also held in the Gym. The Kindergarten Rooms at Providence Academy are one and a half times the size of a normal classroom. They have in-room sinks, and are adjacent to a bathroom. Lower School students have physical education in the Academy's Small Gym. At several times during the school year, Lower School students also have the opportunity to participate in intramural sports during their lunchtime recess. Providence Academy's Lower School students utilize the Playground equiment during recess and before and after school. Some of the Academy's sports fields are also available for recess use. Providence Academy's Science Labs features central gas and water hookups, a safety shower, and fume hood. The lab is also equipped with microscopes and other science equipment. Both biology and chemistry classes are held in the two main labs. The Academy's Health Office is a resource for students who are not feeling well. The Academy has a full-time nurse on staff, who can administer medications and treat minor injuries. Students use the CAD (computer aided drafting) to create detail drawings, assemblies and bills of material for the Academy's Engineering Design class. Students learn to solve an engineering problem by using a step-by-step method to find the best solution. The Academy's Upper School Lecture Hall seats 100 with stadium-style seating. The Hall is used for classes, special presentations and class meetings. The Upper School Media Center is a great place for students to find a good book, research a homework project or browse through the college reference section. The Center also has several computers with Internet access and access to the Academy's data base library. The Academy's Metal Shop allows students to explore the fundamentals of metal fabrication. Students learn how to use a variety of measurement and metalworking tools, and gain proficiency in various metal operations including heat treatments and finishes, soldering, brazing and welding. In the Physics Lab, students study motion, force and Newton's laws, work and energy, momentum and collisions, vibrations and waves, sound, light and reflections. The room is equipped with high tables perfect for lab work. The Academy's Upper School Art Room is made to feel like a real art studio. Hardwood floors, floor to ceiling windows and recessed lighting create the perfect space for artists to develop their portfolios. The Studio is also equipped with pottery wheels and a kiln. Band students work to achieve technical, theoretical, historical and emotional elements of intermediate to advanced instrumental music while learning teamwork and leadership in an ensemble. The Band Room also has space for individual or group practice sessions. Students perform several concerts throughout the year, both in-house and in the community. Students in the Academy's choirs learn appropriate singing techniques through the performance of both sacred and secular vocal music. Students are also instructed in music theory. The band room has space for individual and group rehearsal as well as a spacious, well-lit main practice room.
