Headmaster’s Notes
Todd R. Flanders

We welcomed more than 100 interested people to our first Admissions Open House last week.  Our second Open House will take place here this Thursday from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m., for all grades.  Please encourage your friends and neighbors to check out Providence for their children!  As always, most of our new students and their families mention that they first became aware of Providence through a referral from a friend or relative.  Bless you!

The Annual Fund drive kicked off with a letter sent to your homes recently, and many thanks to those who have already given and pledged.  It is beautiful each year to see the charitable spirit at PA!  Most of our opportunity to offer financial aid to PA students comes through the Annual Fund campaign.  In addition, the Fund aids faculty and staff development, and further growth in arts and athletics.  Last year, this community raised $480,000 dollars through the Annual Fund.  So very much is made possible by such generosity.

This week, members of the faculty will be following up with you by phone to invite your participation, and answer questions you may have.  Thank you very much for your consideration of PA in your annual charitable giving!

The Scholastic Book Fair Blizzard begins this week!  Ideal for Christmas gifts, and for the bookworm in all of us, the Book Fair will offer a wide selection.  Fair dates and times are Thursday, November 15th from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday, November 16th from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Monday and Tuesday, November 19th and 20th from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.  We will be open for business during Parent/Teacher Conferences in the LS/MS Library.  Happy Reading!  For more information, visit http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/providenceacademy

Next week brings fall parent/teacher conferences, Monday and Tuesday.  Registration forms were mailed to families, and extra copies are available in the school offices.  Please do be aware that conference dates and times are scheduled on a first-come/first-served basis.  We’ll see you soon.

Veterans Day celebrations are becoming a big tradition at PA.  As I mentioned last week, we have featured more observances than ever.  For us, this is not simply a matter of finding holidays to celebrate.  At PA, we believe that people who dedicate themselves to higher things—God, neighbor, country—are especially to be honored and praised.  We commemorate saints and heroes, and our veterans are heroes among us in everyday life.  For similar reasons, we strive to teach history well and faithfully, knowing that our freedoms and opportunities are hard won by many struggles in the past.  I was moved by a Veterans Day observance written by military historian Victor Davis Hanson, titled, “Freedom, Even from Fear: Remembering the Special Sacrifices of Our Veterans.  I link it here for you: http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=NDY4NzA2NjFlNTg3ZTFiYjI2ZDk5YmUwMGY0MWI4NmE=

Flanders, Headmaster of Providence Academy.  To impress patriotism on students, concerts and presentations which lend meaning to “Duty, Honor, Country” are celebrated at the school.  (Click here to view the press release in its entirety.)

College Counselor's Corner

Seniors
Most of you are busy working on applications while also attending to your academics.  Try to plan ahead so that you are not too rushed trying to meet application deadlines.  With rare exceptions, you need to complete the yellow Application/Request for Transcript forms (found in the Upper School office) at least two weeks before you require us to mail your recommendations and transcripts.  It is okay to complete the request form while you are still working on your online portion of the application. If you have questions about application processes or components, please schedule a meeting with Ms. Kelly.

College visitors will continue to be on campus throughout the next weeks.  If you are applying to a school, it is a good idea to stop by when their admissions person is at Providence Academy.  Check the daily bulletin or the door at the College Counselors’ office for scheduled visits.

Juniors
College admissions visitors coming to Providence are eager to meet with juniors.  This is an easy way to learn about a college or university before deciding to visit the campus.  Take advantage of this resource.  Check the schedule in the daily bulletin or posted on the College Counseling Office door.

Sophomores
Next up for sophomore testing: sophomores have the option to take the PLAN (pre-ACT) exam on Saturday, November 17th at Providence.  We strongly encourage you to use this opportunity to take the PLAN, a practice for next year’s ACT.  Permission slips must be returned by November 12th to be eligible to sit for the exam.

Freshmen
All freshmen will take the PLAN exam on Thursday, December 20th.  The PLAN is a pre-ACT exam administered to help familiarize students with college entrance test content and format, to give them a feel for timed testing, as well as to help them identify areas of academic strength and weakness.

College Visits
Please note that all college visits may be viewed on the college visit calendar in Naviance/Family Connection.  Members of the Providence community may access this information by logging in as a guest (password: lions) at: https://connection.naviance.com/providenceacad.
