IOur
team's success is derived from all twelve players' making a commitment to
intensity at practice, and then continuing that by practicing after
practice--whether with pros at clubs, or with friends on a neighborhood
court. Off-season workouts are essential to those players seeking to
perform at the highest level of MSHSL competition. We have an outstanding
and supportive parent community that makes the effort to attend matches,
cheer the team, and assist in the development of the whole player--from
tennis aptitude, to prayer life, to fostering team camaraderie. Finally,
each player understands that to become a weapon at both singles and doubles
provides our team greater depth and strength when competing in the MSHSL.
Most recently,
sophomore Elena Sullivan made her second trip to state in singles
tennis. She captured the state championship winning 4 straight matches
over 2 days without dropping a set to claim the 2009 Class A State
championship! In the opening day of play Elena defeated Abby Ness from
Roseau 6-4, 6-1 and Stephanie Biehn in the quarter-finals, 6-1, 6-2.
With those two victories Elena advanced to the second day of the
tournament and the state semi-finals. She won her first match of the
day over Lisa Johnen from Austin Pacelli High School, 6-3, 6-4 to
advance to the championship match. In the championship match, Elena
faced senior Courtney Rust from Rochester Lourdes, winning the first set
6-2. In the second and decisive set, the two players broke each other’s
serve seven times. Elena won the state championship on the final
service break of the match, 6-4.
This was the first
individual state title in
Providence Academy history.
