Open Skate & Toy Drive Thank
You
A big “thank you” to all the families that came to the skate with the Varsity
Hockey team on Friday. There was an outpouring of generosity for Mary's Place.
We collected more toys then ever before to help the homeless at Sharing and
Caring Hands have a Merry Christmas. Our team would like to thank you for your
support and hope to see you at the rink! Go Lions Hockey!
Sabathani Mitten Tree
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, every where you go, there’s a
tree in the library-ee…yes, the librarian is singing! The mitten tree is back
and ready for new mittens to warm the hands and hearts of our friends at
Sabathani Community Center in Minneapolis. We’ll decorate the trees in the
Lower/Middle School Library through December 16th and deliver the mittens to
Sabathani (www.sabathani.org)
in time for their children’s Christmas party on the 18th…but the prettiest sight
to see are the smiles that will be on their dear faces!
Spirit Store Christmas Shopping
We are stocked and ready for Christmas shopping! New sweatshirts, t-shirts,
hats, mittens, choppers, soft blankets and sweats. Order a sport bag right away
for delivery for Christmas with your child’s name embroidered on it. Great new
items just in time for Christmas! Stocking stuffers, water bottles, pre-wrap,
and ID holders. Get your Christmas shopping done in one spot.
Extended Shopping Hours: Now through the 18th,
the Spirit Store will be open every school day from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m.
Volunteers are needed too! If you are interested in
working in the Spirit Store during regular hours, extended hours, or during
Christmas concerts, please contact Mrs. Rebecca Keener at
rlkeener@mac.com. Volunteers receive a 20% discount on purchases made
during their shift.
Uniform and Outerwear Donations Needed
Has your Upper School son grown 6 inches and his pants are too short? Are your
Lower School kids’ snow pants from last year too small? Are you looking for a
place to donate extra Upper School sweaters? The Health Office has a small
supply of clothing for kids who are out of uniform or forgot winter wear. They
are in need of a few used items from Upper and Lower School families. To
streamline this effort, we are using a signup page that identifies the Health
Office’s needs. If you have an item to donate, please indicate your donation on
“My
Signup” and send in your donations. Thank you!
Uniform Sale
Educational Outfitters is offering a 15% discount on all in-stock school
uniforms and accessories through December 31st. And, as always, 3% of your
purchase goes back to Providence Academy! Educational Outfitters is located at
5710 West 36th Street in St. Louis Park. (952) 927-6778.
Yearbook Orders
The cost of the book will be $100 through January. After that, we cannot
guarantee that you will be able to buy a book. Please fill out order forms
completely and the student lunch account will be charged accordingly. Thank
you.

imagination run wild. E-mail me at

you would prefer the Upper, Middle or Lower School meeting. Thank you.

College Counselor's Corner
Announcement
We are pleased to welcome Ms. Meg Otten as Mrs. Hogan’s maternity leave
substitute during the month of January and first week and a half of February.
Juniors and seniors have had the opportunity to meet Ms. Otten, since she has
come to Providence on two separate occasions to ‘shadow’ Mrs. Hogan. Ms.
Otten’s contact information will be available after Christmas break and she will
be meeting particularly with juniors and seniors while Mrs. Hogan is on leave.
Seniors
Any senior not able to attend the College Financial Aid Night the first week
of December should stop by the college counseling office for the presentation
handouts. Please pay attention to college financial aid (especially
scholarship) deadlines. Most colleges have priority deadlines for filing the
FAFSA (www.fafsa.gov) and/or CSS Profile
(https://profileonline.collegeboard.com/prf/index.jsp) in January and February.
Any seniors interested in applying for the TwinWest Foundation Scholarship (and
other local scholarships requiring transcripts and/or letters of recommendation)
should notify Mrs. Hogan: applications were distributed at Financial Aid Night
and are available online. Seniors now have access to a scholarship database by
accessing their Family Connection account. Please pay attention to deadlines!
TRANSCRIPT REQUEST REMINDER (For
Scholarships and Admission Applications)
Seniors must complete the Transcript Request Form (the ‘blue’ form
distributed to seniors in early September) two weeks before the posted
admission/scholarship deadlines. It is okay to complete the request form while
you are still working on your online portion of the application. Also, remember
to send your ACT and/or SAT scores directly from the testing companies
(www.actstudent.org or www.collegeboard.com). All seniors are expected to
complete the majority of their applications by Christmas break. If you have
questions about application processes or components, contact Mrs. Hogan or stop
by the Upper School Office to schedule a meeting with Mrs. Hogan before/after
school, during lunch, study, or FLEX periods.
Juniors
Junior College Counseling Meetings: All juniors will have had their
preliminary individual college counseling meeting with Mrs. Hogan by Christmas
break. During the meeting, we will review their junior college counseling
survey, interest and personality inventories, as well as explore the college
search features in the program and begin building a college list. Parents are
invited and highly encouraged to attend all subsequent meetings in second
semester. Please note that the second round of meetings will be conducted by Ms.
Meg Otten, Mrs. Hogan's maternity leave substitute in January and part of
February. Details will be forthcoming from the College Counseling Office!
All juniors who took the PSAT Exam on
October 14th received their score reports, plus information on registering for
the ACT/SAT (and preparation options) during FLEX time on Thursday, December 3.
Students were instructed to bring their results home to share with their
parents. Mrs. Hogan will also review individual score reports with juniors
during their college counseling meetings this winter. For any juniors that took
the PRA, the results were also handed back and explained by a Princeton Review
representative. Regarding ACT and SAT preparation, registration is now closed
for the Providence Academy Annual ACT Exam Prep Course the three Saturdays
before the February 6, 2010 ACT Exam (Providence is a local test site). Online
prep for the SAT using Method Test Prep (via Naviance/Family Connection) will be
available for the rest of the school year.
Sophomores
All sophomores who took the PSAT Exam on October 14th received their score
reports with a letter from Mrs. Hogan the first week of December. The results
should be used to determine areas of academic strength and the areas in which
each student may want to improve. Sophomores will take the PSAT again their
junior year, when their scores will be entered into the National Merit
Scholarship competition. Mrs. Hogan will also be available to meet individually
with sophomores to review their score reports, if needed.
Freshmen
All freshmen who took the PLAN Exam on October 14th will received their
score reports with a letter from Mrs. Semsch the first week of December. The
PLAN is a pre-ACT exam administered to help familiarize students with college
entrance test content and format, to give them a feel for timed testing, as well
as to help them identify areas of academic strength and weakness. Mrs. Semsch is
also available to meet individually with freshmen to review their score report,
and the ninth grade students will participate in a career exploration activity
(on Tuesday, January 5th) using the information from the World of Work Map
included in their PLAN results folder.
College Visits
Other than PA alumni returning to Providence to talk about their college
experiences, college visits will resume in the spring semester, with the bulk of
college visitors making plans to come to our College Fair Day on April 20, 2010
(Save the Date!). College visits may still be viewed on the college visit
calendar in Naviance/Family Connection. Members of the Providence community may
access this information by logging in as a guest (password: lions) at:
https://connection.naviance.com/providenceacad.
