The Upper School Band’s first concert of the
year is tonight at 7 p.m. in the Great Room. Free and open to the
public, selections include our National
Anthem, performed by a flute ensemble, our jazz band swinging on
“American Patrol,” and a programmatic piece about the attack on
Pearl Harbor. This will be a great evening of patriotic music!

Mr. Tom Monaghan, founder of Domino’s Pizza
turned Catholic philanthropist, addressed Upper School students this
afternoon. Monaghan offered elements of his personal story, as well
as reflections on faith and vocation. His story is about
entrepreneurism, hard work, a growing faith, demands of business
leadership, ownership of a sports franchise (Detroit Tigers), deeper
religious conversion, and more. After selling Domino’s for more
than $1 billion, Monaghan devoted himself to Catholic charitable
enterprises, notably the founding of Ave Maria University and an
organization of Catholic business leaders called Legatus. Our hope
is that young people may be inspired by the Christian walk of
others, in faith, work, and service.

Our first Admissions Open House is tomorrow
(Tuesday), starting at 6:30. I invite you to encourage friends and
neighbors to give PA a look. Interested families may call Courtney
Daniel at (763) 258-2502 to pre-register. Of course, we also
welcome drop-ins at the door.

There has been some very good response to the
first group of radio spots in a new PA ad campaign. You can hear
our ads on various stations, or streamed from our website’s
homepage. Our own teachers and coaches are featured in the
campaign, which is a lot of fun, and there are plans to involve more
as we move forward.

Our state champion tennis player, Elena
Sullivan, will be featured in the Star Tribune West Metro
section tomorrow. Hasn’t it been quite the autumn of sports, at all
levels?
Last Thursday, PA
Volleyball defeated Minneapolis North 3 to 0 to advance to the
semifinal round of the subsection playoffs. The match will be
played Tuesday night, November 3rd at Heritage Christian
at 7:00 p.m. Since it’s a section playoff game, admission is
charged to all--$7 for adults and $5 for students. Come out and
support your Lions!
Also last Thursday,
the Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country teams competed in the section
meet, with freshman Rosie Simonse qualifying for state. The Girls’
Class A race will be held at St. Olaf on Saturday, November 7th
at 2:00 p.m. Good luck, Rosie!

“What Makes a Kid Really Like School?” that’s
a question I’m privileged to address in a talk Friday at 2 p.m. in
the Upper School Lecture Hall, as part of our “Love and Logic”
series. Drawing from recent research in cognitive neuroscience,
I’ll discuss ways that both parents and teachers can improve our
abilities to raise and educate happy young people.

Admissions Applications for Siblings
Calling all Providence siblings! Does your student have a sibling that will be
of school age and is looking to attend the Academy in 2010-2011? If so, we
would love to have his or her application as soon as possible in the Admissions
Office. An early look at enrollment helps us plan for the next year. If you
need an application, please call (763) 258-2502 and we will put one in the

Band Honors for PA Junior
Providence is pleased to announce
that Genevieve McCarthy will proudly represent the Academy in the Gold Honor
Band at the University of Minnesota, Duluth on November 6th and 7th.
Congratulations, Genevieve!
Baseball School
Providence Academy Baseball School will begin on November 7th and
will continue with Saturday morning one-hour sessions twice a month until Spring
Break. The Baseball School utilizes a combination of instruction, drills and
fun competitive games to develop the baseball skills needed for success.
These private group lessons will be led by Coach Brian
Swan. Coach Swan is a former Lead Instructor for the Doyle Baseball Academy,
certified by the National Positive Coaching Alliance, and a Coach and Mentor for
the Mental Edge, a sports performance improvement organization. All current 3rd
– 12th grade PA students, or those interested in attending PA, are
eligible. Limited space is available. For more information, contact Coach Swan

Fall Book Feast
Mark your calendars for PA’s First Annual “Book Feast,” taking place
November 19th, 20th, 23rd and 24th. Our feast this year has a full
complement of delectable reads; from mystery and history, to cooking and
classics, and faith and friendship, we’ll have a little something for everyone!
A Book Feast 2009 letter and order limit/permission slip was included in the
November Lions’ Pride. See Mrs. Commers’
web page for the menu of titles and schedule and be sure to call if you have
questions. Can’t wait for you to be our guest!
Fall Cleanup Help Available
If you know of anyone who needs help with
fall cleanup, please contact Coach Lipelt at
rlipelt@comcast.net. Football players are willing to serve the Providence
community. Contributions are not necessary, but any gifts received will be
directed to the Huts for Homes project.

Parent-Teacher conferences are coming up quickly on Monday, November 23rd and
Tuesday, November 24th.
Middle and Upper School
Sign up forms were sent home in the mail. Please return them as soon as
possible. Middle and Upper School conferences are run in an open block format
and payments may choose from the following sessions:

- 3:30-5:30 p.m. session
- 6:30-8:30 p.m. session

Kindergarten through 5th
Grade
Parent-Teacher Conferences for Grades K-5 will be held after school and on the
evenings of Monday, November 23rd and Tuesday, November 24th. Individual
conferences will be scheduled for parents to meet with teachers, and are
scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign up information was mailed
home last week.
Pre-Kindergarten
Parent-Teacher Conferences for Pre-Kindergarten will be held Monday, November
23rd and Tuesday, November 24th. Individual conferences will be scheduled for
parents to meet with Dr. Krocak, and are scheduled on a first-come, first-served
basis. Sign up information was mailed home last week.

Upcoming Directors’ Presentation
Mark your calendars for
the Division Directors’ Presentations that are scheduled in the Lecture Hall at
2:00 p.m. on select Fridays. Discover how the principles of Love & Logic are at
work at Providence Academy and how you can use them at home with children of any
age.

New Book Group Starts This
Month
Learn about the basic concepts of Love &
Logic, while joining other parents for group discussion. The book group for
Love & Logic Magic: When Kids Leave You Speechless begins on November 12th
and registration is limited to eight people. To reserve a spot, please email

Minnesota Twins Game Day with
Providence Academy
Providence Academy announces a chance to
come together at the new Target Stadium for a game in May 2010. We are
currently working with the Minnesota Twins organization to solidify a date,
pricing and meal deals. We want to gauge families’ interest in attending this
all-school event. Tickets will be reserved in a block for the following
potential date: Sunday, May 23rd, 2010 at 1:10 p.m. Final dates,
times and cost of this event are still in negotiation. Please e-mail Mrs.
Courtney Daniel in the Admissions Office at
courtney.daniel@providenceacademy.org to indicate your interest and the
number of family members who may attend.
Poinsettia Orders
The Upper School Student Council is selling
poinsettia plants to raise money for operating expenses incurred throughout the
year. The plants are grown locally by Wagners Greenhouses, a family owned
business since 1901. Orders must be received by today, November 2nd
and plants will be available for pickup on Tuesday, December 8th.
The order form was sent home with students last week and is also found on Mrs.
Schafer’s
webpage. Thank you in advance for your support!
Sleep Out 2009
Please plan to tent out for the homeless/Interfaith Outreach on Saturday,
November 14 at Klapprich Park in Wayzata. We have set up a “Providence” tenting
area, with our banner, and we have the capacity for up to 100 tents! Please

There will be a Sleep Out Kickoff Rally on
Saturday, November 14th, 6-8 p.m. at Klapprich Park, 300 E. Wayzata
Blvd. in Wayzata. There will be food, fun and activities for all. Grab your
colleagues, family, neighbors, friends…everyone! We are striving to help 1,000
families with housing this year.

Join us at the “Community Sleep Out” on
Saturday, November 14th until early Sunday, November 15th
at Klapprich Park in Wayzata, hosted by the Board of Directors of IOCP! We will
set aside a special area for Providence families to pitch tents, or place their
boxes. They would need to bring their own warm camping gear (sleeping bags,
blankets) and youth under age 18 must be accompanied by a supervising adult
(Greg Pulles will be coordinating with other chaperones!). The Sleep Out
opportunity begins immediately after the Kickoff Rally and promises to be a
“cool” adventure! (Note, there is a warming house with indoor restrooms
available throughout the night!)
Uniform and Outerwear
Donations Needed
Has your Upper School son grown 6 inches and his pants are too short? Are your
Lower School kids’ snow pants from last year too small? Are you looking for a
place to donate extra Upper School sweaters? The Health Office has a small
supply of clothing for kids who are out of uniform or forgot winter wear. They
are in need of a few used items from Upper and Lower School families. To
streamline this effort, we are using a signup page that identifies the Health
Office’s needs. If you have an item to donate, please indicate your donation on
“My
Signup” and send in your donations. Thank you!
United Way Gifts Designated
for PA
Providence Academy is an eligible 501(c)3 recipient of United Way
contributions. In other words, if you contribute to the United Way campaign via
a one time gift or by payroll deduction, you can designate the Academy as the
beneficiary of your donation.
Providence Academy is also an
eligible nonprofit recipient of employer-matched gifts. If you and your
employer team up to make tax-deductible contributions to PA, the school will
benefit doubly. And your family gets full credit for the doubled gift—including
membership in our Lion Rampant Society for total gifts of $2,500 and above.
Gifts provide major support for
need-based financial aid, arts and athletics, faculty development, and more.

Wayzata Transportation
Reminder
The Wayzata School District will not be in session on Thursday, November 12th
and Friday, November 13th. Therefore no Wayzata bus service will be available
to Providence Academy students. Parents are reminded to make other
transportation arrangements.
Yearbook Orders
Don’t forget to buy a yearbook. The cost of the yearbook is $80 through
November. Order forms may be returned to Mrs. Stachour. Please do not send
checks, as student lunch accounts will be charged for the cost of the books.

Middle/Upper School News
7th Grade Advent Service Project
Last year, Providence
Academy Middle Schoolers developed a relationship with the Simpson House, a
local homeless shelter. PA students made sandwiches for its residents during
Lent. As the spring progressed, Middle School students collected hundreds of
boxes of cereal for the shelter which were matched by General Mills.
During this season of Advent, the
7th grade would like to continue its support of the shelter by making blankets
to be used by the residents. Students will make the popular fleece tie blankets
during Extended Ultima. In preparation for the project we are graciously asking
the PA community, especially our avid sewers, to donate fleece for our project.

10th Grade Coffee &
Conversation
All 10th grade parents are invited to a
Coffee & Conversation with Dr. Ferdinandt on Friday, November 20th, at 2:00 p.m.
in the Lecture Hall. This is a wonderful opportunity to become acquainted with
Dr. Ferdinandt as well as other 10th grade parents! Your RSVP will enable

Fall Coffee House Concert
The Fall Coffee House Concert is right
around the corner! Mark your calendars to attend on Friday, November 13th. The
concert showcases Upper School students’ talents in voice, studio art, strings,
drama, jazz band, rock band, comedy and more!
Father Daughter Dinner Dance
Join us for a glamorous evening of dinner
and dancing! This special event is scheduled for Saturday, November 14th
and begins with Holy Mass (optional) at 6:00 p.m. Gathering and social hour
start at 7:00 p.m. and are followed by dinner, dessert and dancing.

Ski and Snowboard Club Registration

October 28, 2009 – Freedom Pointe Hosts Providence Academy
Adopt-A-Grandparent Program
This week, Providence Academy students began an Adopt-A-Grandparent program
with Freedom Pointe Assisted Living facility in Minnetonka, MN. The
Academy’s 6th grade students made their first of multiple planned visits to
Freedom Pointe where they were introduced to their “grandparent” with whom

Athletics Update
Elena Sullivan Wins State!
Sophomore Elena Sullivan advanced to the state tennis finals with a win last
Friday over Lisa Johnen from Austin Pacelli High School, 6-3, 6-4. In the
championship match, Elena faced senior Courtney Rust from Rochester Lourdes,
winning the first set 6-2. In the second and decisive set, the two players
broke each other’s serve seven times. Elena won the state championship on the
final service break of the match, 6-4.
This is the first individual state title in
Providence Academy history, to go along with Track relay and team
championships. Congratulations, Elena!

calling the Sports Hotline at (763) 258-2580. The Hotline is updated daily and
contains all of the day’s information and happenings.
Schedules and Directions to Away Events
Both schedules and directions to away events can be found on the Providence
Academy website at

the home page, simply click on the rSchoolToday Calendar link. Then select a
sport from the View Schedules list on the right side of the page.
Weather-Related Cancellations
In the event athletic schedules change, the Sports Hotline is updated by 2:00
daily. Please call the Hotline at (763) 258-2580 for the latest information.
The rSchoolToday Calendar will also be updated as soon as information is
available.
Webcast America
www.webcast50.com is the place to go this
fall for varsity athletics. For ease of access, there is a link on PA’s home
page to the Webcast America site. Note all games and events on the site remain
available to view for a calendar year. Check out all the action you may have
missed on Webcast America.

College Counselor's Corner
Seniors
December 3: College Financial Aid Night
Financial Aid Night is scheduled from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Lecture Hall.
Seniors (and parents), don’t miss the opportunity for an in-depth
workshop on applying for financial aid, regardless of your family’s income
situation. Given the tough economic times, aid is available, whether need-based
or merit-based (i.e. scholarships). This workshop will be given by one of the
best college financial aid presenters in the country, and refreshments will be
served.
Coffee and College Applications is Back!
We are resurrecting the tradition started by last year's seniors by offering a
series of Wednesday morning 'coffee and college apps' opportunities for the
remainder of October (plus Wednesdays in November before Thanksgiving) as
seniors are busy finishing college applications. Interested seniors, please
come to the Upper School Office on Wednesdays at 7:30 a.m. Mrs. Hogan will be
available to help with applications (including resumes, essays, supplements,
scholarship/honors, etc.) and coffee and cocoa will be provided (or bring your
favorite!).
Transcript Request Reminder
Seniors must complete the Transcript Request Form (the ‘blue’ form distributed
to seniors in early September) two weeks before the posted admission deadlines.
It is okay to complete the request form while you are still working on your
online portion of the application. Also, remember to send your ACT and/or SAT
scores directly from the testing companies (www.actstudent.org
or
www.collegeboard.com). If you have questions about application processes or
components, please come to 'Coffee and College Applications on Wednesdays at
7:30 a.m. or schedule a meeting with Mrs. Hogan before/after school, during
lunch or study periods.
College Visits
A few more college visitors will come to PA throughout the next few weeks. If
you are applying to a school, plan to stop by when their Admission
Representative is at Providence Academy. Check Family Connection, listen for the
reminder announcements, and/or check out the posters outside the College
Counselor’s Office. College visit passes must be obtained from the Upper School
Office no later than the morning of the day of the visit.
Juniors
The first follow up session to College Night for Juniors on using the Naviance/Family
Connection web program will take place during Religion classes on November 12
and individual junior meetings with Mrs. Hogan will begin shortly thereafter.
Juniors may sign up to take the optional PRA (Princeton Review
Assessment), which will take place from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on
Saturday, November 7 in the Lecture Hall. Results will be available in
December, around the same time that score reports from the PSAT will be returned
to students. Mrs. Hogan will let you know when your results are available.
Regarding ACT and SAT preparation, Providence will offer its annual ACT Exam
Prep Course the three Saturdays before the February 6, 2010 ACT Exam (Providence
is a local test site) and online prep for the SAT using Method Test Prep (via
Naviance/Family Connection). A letter detailing the above information was mailed
to juniors the last week of October.
The remaining college visitors coming to Providence this fall are
eager to meet with juniors (as well as seniors). This is an easy way to learn
about a college or university before deciding to visit the campus. Take
advantage of this resource but be sure to obtain a College Visit Pass from the
Upper School Office no later than the morning of the visit.
Sophomores
The results of October 14th PSAT testing should be
available in mid-December: results should be used to determine areas of academic
strength and the areas in which each student may want to improve. Sophomores
will take the PSAT again their junior year, when their scores will be entered
into the National Merit Scholarship competition.
Freshmen
All freshmen who took the PLAN exam on October 14th should
receive their score reports in mid-December. The PLAN is a pre-ACT exam
administered to help familiarize students with college entrance test content and
format, to give them a feel for timed testing, as well as to help them identify
areas of academic strength and weakness.

in Naviance/Family Connection. Members of the Providence community may access
