Headmaster’s Notes
Todd R. Flanders

The sacred season of Lent begins tomorrow, Ash Wednesday.  Our annual all-school Mass, with distribution of ashes, will be at 2 p.m.  We will be observing the season with special prayer opportunities (such as the Stations of the Cross) and other events throughout.  Children of appropriate ages may participate in fasting and abstinence according to the Church’s teachings (see link: http://www.usccb.org/lent/fast.shtml).  Many more can join the pious custom of “giving up” something for Lent.  We can thus remind ourselves that our deepest hunger, and our deepest desire, should be foremost for a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Congratulations to seniors Kathryn Kennedy and Michael Thompson, who have been named Finalists in the National Merit program.  Recognized with the program's highest designation, Finalists are eligible for special scholarships and are termed “National Merit Scholars.”  Well done, Kathryn and Michael!

Our Upper School “Current Events” elective course will host some special-speaker events this semester, to which parents are invited as well.  Tomorrow at 12:55, the first of these will be held in the Lecture Hall, and will feature alumni Luke Olson and Alex Johnson.  They will relate stories and observations from their remarkable recent travels through the Middle East.

Our own Mrs. Debra Spears appeared yesterday on KARE 11's Showcase Minnesota (link below).  Also a discussion leader for MomsLikeMe.com, Mrs. Spears offers advice to parents on summer-program planning for kids.  (Not incidentally, she is coordinator of PA’s own summer programs!)  http://www.showcaseminnesota.com/show/client_article.aspx?storyid=842035

Lower School News

Operation Rice Bowl
Almsgiving is an important value associated with the season of Lent in the Church.  The Lower School students will be encouraged to practice Almsgiving by participating in Operation Rice Bowl during Lent.  Operation Rice Bowl helps to supply food to the poorest of our world through Catholic Relief Services.  Last week, Lower School students received small boxes in which they are encouraged to place monetary donations.  In this way, each child may donate his or her own coins to alleviate the suffering of other children.

Parents are asked to encourage and remind students to make regular donations to their rice bowls throughout Lent.  If your child gave up candy for Lent, he/she might donate the money they would have spent for the candy to their rice bowl.  Then, another child somewhere will be getting something he or she needs in exchange for something we don’t really need.

Rice bowls will be collected in each classroom on Tuesday, March 16th.

College Counselor's Corner
A hearty thanks goes out from Providence Academy to Mrs. Otten for the gift of her time and talents while she substituted for Mrs. Hogan.  Mrs. Hogan is officially back full-time from maternity and is looking forward to working with seniors in the final stretch of the college selection process, as well as with the juniors as they are embarking on this process.

Seniors
Scholarships, scholarships, scholarships!  Please note upcoming deadlines for local, regional, and national scholarships, such as the Maple Grove Lions Club Scholarship (2/24).   Scholarship information can be accessed through Naviance Family Connection—in the “Scholarships and Money” area, look for the “Scholarship List” tab and the “National Scholarship Search” tab.  They both have valuable information!

Also watch those college-specific financial aid deadlines, especially for the FAFSA (www.fafsa.ed.gov), CSS Profile (https://profileonline.collegeboard.com/prf/index.jsp), and individual financial aid forms (check your colleges’ websites).

Juniors
It is recommended that students take both the ACT with Writing and SAT Reasoning test at least once in the spring of the junior year.  For more information on registering for these exams, please visit the appropriate testing web sites: www.actstudent.org (ACT) and www.collegeboard.com (SAT).

If your spring break plans include visiting colleges, now would be a good time to start checking individual college websites for their calendars (so you can avoid visiting during their spring break, if possible) and registering for those visits.  Ideally, a visit will include an Information Session or interview with Admissions, campus tour, sitting in on a class and a meal in the cafeteria.  As always, the most important thing about campus visits is to be open minded and keep track of your own reactions to each place.

Remember that Naviance is a powerful tool for generating possible colleges to explore and viewing historical acceptance information.  If any parents need help accessing Naviance Family Connection, please contact Miss Erica Hanson in the Upper School Office.

College Visits
Save the date!  Our 2010 Spring College Fair will be held during the afternoon of Tuesday, April 20th.  Details forthcoming.
