Headmaster’s Notes
Todd R. Flanders

Winter weather abounds!  Just a reminder that any rare instance of delayed school start or cancellation would be conveyed via WCCO channel 4 and KARE channel 11.

It was fun to see our proud 2007 graduate-and-now-Yale-student Max Hendrickson on a Today Show segment this morning—if ever so briefly.  The piece itself is about oddball college courses that often (and to some of us, regrettably) replace offerings in core liberal arts and sciences.  Here’s a link: http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/35294796#35294796

Middle School Director Steve Cunningham will offer this Friday’s Love and Logic® series presentation, at 2 p.m. in the Lecture Hall.  Mr. Cunningham will address “The Self-Esteem Myth.”  Learn about true self-esteem, false versions of it, and how it can be developed in kids.  Parents and friends are invited.

A reminder that re-enrollment contracts are due to the Admissions Office by February 12th.  The contract includes the Code of Conduct which must be signed by all students in grades 2-12.  Parents may read the Code of Conduct to younger children and sign for them.  A deposit of $750 per student is required to hold their spot in the 2010-2011 school year.  This deposit is deducted from the first tuition payment.

We are looking forward to entering our tenth year and deeply appreciate our supportive community!

Important Dates for Financial Aid
If you are interested in learning more about financial aid programs at Providence Academy, please join us this Thursday, February 11th from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Upper School Lecture Hall.  We will present an overview of how financial aid works through Tuition Assistance Data Services or TADS.

All applications for financial aid must be completed online or mailed by March 1st.  This includes mailing or faxing copies of W2 and 1040 forms needed for the TADS audit.  For more complicated returns, other information may be needed so TADS contacts each family by email.  Thank you for your attention to the March 1st deadline.

Registration for 2010-2011 Takes Place this Month
It’s hard to believe that it is already time to think about your son’s or daughter’s course selections for next year, but scheduling, staffing and budgeting decisions will be made based on the information you give us early this spring.

  • Re-enrollment contracts are due by February 12th
  • Academic Program Guides (online and printed copies) were made available last week to students entering grades 6-12.  Please review these materials with your student(s) and contact Mrs. Semsch or Mr. Tiffany for academic advising.

Pick up the PACE (Providence Academy Character Education)
January PACE lessons focused on some of the more difficult social/emotional issues that many middle school students face.

  • On January 20th, the 6th grade discussed bullying.  Ask your 6th grader about how to identify bullying behaviors, and what they should do if they witness bullying.  They are equipped with a number of tools for this!
  • On January 21st and 22nd, the 7th graders heard about conflict resolution.  Ask your 7th grader about the steps to resolving conflicts peacefully, and how to use “I statements” to express their emotions.
  • On January 27th the 8th graders learned about emotional intelligence.  Ask your 8th grader about the benefits of being able to recognize emotions, process them, and make good choices based on what they (and others!) feel.

Upcoming PACE lessons in February
6th grade: Rumors & Reputation, Trust & Secrets
7th grade: Limits and Boundaries, Personal Space
8th grade: Chastity & Dating

Sharing & Caring Hands Service Project
Beginning today through Tuesday, February 16th, the third grade class will be collecting items to deliver to Sharing and Caring Hands of Minneapolis. There are a variety of personal items that will be collected namely, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, and shampoo, as well as winter items such as gloves, hats, mittens, and socks.  Winter items can be slightly used.  In order for your children to take more responsibility for this service to others, they may help with chores around the house to earn money to buy supplies or use allowance money to purchase items to donate.

Donated items can be brought to your child’s classroom anytime between now and February 16th.  On February 17th, the third grade class will be taking a fieldtrip to Sharing and Caring Hands to deliver the supplies and tour the facility.  Thank you for your support and God bless you!

College Counselor's Corner
Seniors

Scholarships, scholarships, scholarships!  Please note upcoming deadlines for local, regional, and national scholarships, such as Best Buy Community Scholarship (2/15) and Maple Grove Lions Club Scholarship (2/24).  Scholarship information can be accessed through Naviance Family Connection – in the “Scholarships and Money” area, look for the “Scholarship List” tab and the “National Scholarship Search” tab.  They both have valuable information!

Also watch those college-specific financial aid deadlines, especially for the FAFSA (www.fafsa.ed.gov), CSS Profile (https://profileonline.collegeboard.com/prf/index.jsp), and individual financial aid forms (check your colleges’ websites).

Juniors
It is recommended that students take both the ACT with Writing and SAT Reasoning test at least once in the spring of the junior year.  For more information on registering for these exams, please visit the appropriate testing web sites: www.actstudent.org (ACT) and www.collegeboard.com (SAT).

If your spring break plans include visiting colleges, now would be a good time to start checking individual college websites for their calendars (so you can avoid visiting during their spring break, if possible) and registering for those visits.  Ideally, a visit will include an Information Session or interview with Admissions, campus tour, sitting in on a class and a meal in the cafeteria.  As always, the most important thing about campus visits is to be open minded and keep track of your own reactions to each place.

Mrs. Otten has finished her individual meetings with juniors.  Remember that Naviance is a powerful tool for generating possible colleges to explore and viewing historical acceptance information.  If any parents need help accessing Naviance Family Connection, please contact Erica Hanson in the Upper School Office.

College Visits
Save the date!  Our 2010 Spring College Fair will be held during the afternoon of Tuesday, April 20th.  Details forthcoming.
