Headmaster’s Notes
Todd R. Flanders

Catholic Schools Week is a yearly mid-winter festival that offers students plenty of bright spots during the gray of Minnesota February.  But the heart of the week is the celebration of our freedom and privilege to learn and grow together from the heart of faith in Christ Jesus, who is “the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”  We began the week this morning with the following prayer:

“Blessed are you, O Lord our God.
You give us time for growing and learning
and you give us the gift of this Catholic education.
May we, with your servant, Saint Thomas Aquinas, thank you for our
     Academy;
And with your servant, Saint John Baptist de La Salle, thank you for
     our teachers;
And with your servant, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, thank you for our
     learning;
And with your servant, Saint John Bosco, thank you for our faith;
And with your servant, Saint Katharine Drexel, thank you for all your
     gifts to us.
As these holy men and women have educated the faithful and been
     your servants,
may we too serve you and work toward a faith-filled future.
Through Christ we pray. Amen.”

Information about special Catholic Schools Week events are in Lower, Middle, and Upper School News sections below.

A “Technology Night for Middle School Parents” is being held tomorrow, February 2, at 6:30 p.m. in the Upper School Lecture Hall.  Parents of Lower and Upper School students may find this session of interest also.  Our own School Resource Police Officer, Steve Baloun,
will address technology issues relevant to Middle School age students.  He will cover the importance of supervising the use of the internet by your child, the dangers associated with the misuse of technology, and effective parenting approaches and strategies to keep your child safe.  He will also address “hot topics” in the Middle School technology world, including use of cell phones, texting, and social networking communities.  There will be a Q & A session following his presentation for parents to ask specific questions.  Light refreshments will be served.

Many of you may have heard about the controversy surrounding the Tim Tebow ad sponsored by Focus on the Family.  The ad, scheduled to air during the Super Bowl, features the story of how Tebow's mother, Pam Tebow, rejected a doctor's suggestion to get an abortion when she became ill on a missions trip to the Philippines during her pregnancy with Tim.  Amidst much controversy, and pro-life voices – CBS is planning (so far) to air the ad.   I invite you to join me and many in the Archdiocese in expressing support for airing this ad during the Super Bowl by contacting CBS.  A quick link to the CBS Feedback form can be found here: http://www.cbs.com/info/user_services/fb_global_form.php

All applications for financial aid must be completed online or mailed by March 1st.  This includes mailing or faxing copies of W2 and 1040 forms needed for the TADS audit.  For more complicated returns, other information may be needed so TADS contacts each family by email.  Thank you for your attention to the March 1st deadline.

Reenrollment Contracts Due February 12th
Reenrollments contracts are being created for 2010-2011 and will be mailed in late January.  Please look over your contract and return it to the Admissions Office by February 12th.  The contract includes the Code of Conduct which must be signed by all students in grades 2-12.  Parents may read the Code of Conduct to younger children and sign for them.  A deposit of $750 per student is required to hold their spot in the 2010-2011 school year.  This deposit is deducted from the first tuition payment.

We are looking forward to entering our tenth year and deeply appreciate our supportive community.

Registration for 2010-2011 Takes Place this Month
It’s hard to believe that it is already time to think about your son’s or daughter’s course selections for next year, but scheduling, staffing and budgeting decisions will be made based on the information you give us early this spring.

  • Re-enrollment contracts are due by February 12th
  • Academic Program Guides (online and printed copies) will be made available this week to students entering grades 6-12.  Please review these materials with your student(s) and contact Mrs. Semsch or Mr. Tiffany for academic advising.
  • Upper School Honors/Advanced Course Applications and information about the requirements for honors math, science and world language courses will be distributed this week.  Honors/Advanced Course applications are due Tuesday, February 9th.  Please see Mr. Tiffany with honors application questions.
  • Online registration for elective, world language and other optional courses will begin Friday, February 19th.  The online registration window will close Monday, March 1st.  All students who register online within this window will have equal priority among their classmates.  Electives are filled based on seniority.  Seniority order for elective preferences for students without reenrollment contracts or who have not completed online registration by March 1st cannot be guaranteed.  Please contact Mrs. Semsch or Mr. Tiffany with questions about online registration.
    • The computer lab will be open for students to register or ask registration questions on Tuesday, February 23rd and Thursday, February 25th from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m.

The Spirit Store has two volunteer positions available for the 2010-2011 school year.  If you are interested in serving as the store manager or volunteer scheduler, please contact Mrs. Lori Determan, Business Manager, for more information at (763) 258-2505 or lori.determan@providenceacademy.org.

Thanks for Your Referrals!
The Admissions Department would like to thank our current families for their support and influence in attracting new students to Providence Academy.  Overwhelmingly, new families say that they have talked to a current Providence family and that was the reason they called for information or decided to take a tour.  We have stories of chats in dental offices, discussions on the golf course, and talks with co-workers.  There are even many second tier referrals from friends who know friends of Providence families!  Thank you for spreading the word about our great school and sharing your stories with others

Two More Responses Needed for the Media Survey
We have had a great response to the media survey but need just a couple more participants to make the survey statistically valid.  In fact, we need just two more responses to cross our desired threshold!  If you haven’t taken the media survey yet, we would love your input.  The survey can be found at www.surveymonkey.com/s/mediasurvey.  Thanks for your support.
