Headmaster’s Notes
Todd R. Flanders

In a letter sent to homes on Friday, we reported that the “Bridge Program” of financial aid is being continued at PA for the coming year.  We will be holding a special, optional, session for any who wish to learn more about PA aid programs on Thursday, February 11, from 7-8 p.m. in the Upper School Lecture Hall. There we will present an overview of how financial aid works through Tuition Assistance Data Services or TADS.

All applications for financial aid will be due (mailed, or completed online) by March 1st.  This will include mailing or faxing copies of W2 and 1040 forms needed for the TADS audit.  For more complicated returns, other information may be needed, so TADS contacts each family by email.

Middle School Boys Basketball Tournament Results
This past weekend the Middle School boys basketball program completed a successful culmination to the NSPSL league season.  The eighth grade team (Varsity Blue) competed in the upper division tournament for the league.  The team began things by defeating Heritage 45 to 30.  They followed that by avenging an early season loss in beating Epiphany 46 to 37.  In the championship game, the team once again played a team in Maranatha Black who had beaten them the first time, but this time Providence came out on top by a score of 35 to 32 to win the league title.  It is the first time in school history that Providence has won the NSPSL Varsity division championship in basketball.  Team members include:  Eric Busch, Jeff Leggott, Jeff Patnode, Scott Stankey, Vince Sellner, Nick Eaton, Spencer Turner, Nick White, Stephen Dobbs and Nathan Anderson.

The 7th grade team (Varsity Gold) played in the Tier 2 division of the league tournament.  The team got a first round bye as the number one seed.  Their first win was over St. Stephen by around 10 points.  In the championship game, they also played someone in Meadow Creek who they had lost to during the regular season.  The time however, the Lions came out on top, winning 30 to 20 to capture the championship.  Team members include:  Ben Frederickson, Michael Villafana, Trent and Trey Wiebusch, Max Tahija, Dan Fafinski, Peter Webster, Jay Apedoh, William Wade and Joe Baird.

The previous weekend the Middle School JV boys team had also captured first place in their league tournament by defeating Epiphany by 10 points in the championship game.  This meant that Providence Academy won all three of the top tournaments for NSPSL Boys basketball.  JV team members include:  Alan Garcia, J.P. Galgano, Elijah Flanders, Alex Palsgrove, Chase Goodwin, Grant Gardner, Matthew Ferreira, Andrew Murphy, Ryan Richelsen and Dominik Ruch.  Congratulations to all the boys for their accomplishments.

The Varsity division has an all star game each year and the following players have been selected to represent Providence in that game:  Trent and Trey Wiebusch, Jeff Patnode and Nick White.  If you want to come cheer them on, the game is tomorrow (Tuesday, January 26th) at St. Vincent at 7:00 p.m.  Good luck to the boys.

Technology Night for Middle School Parents
Middle School Parents are invited to attend “Technology 101” presented by our School Resource Officer, Steve Baloun.  Officer Baloun will address technology issues relevant to Middle School age students.  He will cover the importance of supervising the use of the internet by your child, the dangers associated with the misuse of technology, and effective parenting approaches and strategies to keep your child safe.  He will also address the “hot topics” in the Middle School technology world including use of cell phones, texting, and social networking communities.  There will be a Q & A session following his presentation for parents to ask specific questions.

Officer Baloun has a broad background in police work and has served on the Plymouth Police Force since 1990.  He has experience as a patrolman, investigator, K-9 officer, reserve coordinator and school resource worker at Armstrong High School.  In addition, Office Baloun served for over 10 years as a member of the Plymouth Police Department SWAT Team.

Office Baloun also works directly with the Middle School students with 7the “Netsmarts” program.  The students have attended his workshop educating them on the dangers associated with technology and keeping themselves safe.

We look forward to seeing you Tuesday, February 2nd at 6:30 p.m. in the Lecture Hall. Light refreshments will be served.
