Headmaster’s Notes
Todd R. Flanders

Coming back after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, I give thanks for the opportunity to live in a country where a life of freedom and equality can be a dream-come-true.  And I give thanks also for being able to serve in a school where “the content of character” matters and makes a difference.

Do you know the term used for regions of reduced precipitation that occur on the downwind side of mountain ranges?  Sixth grader Charlie Hemler does.  Last week he won the Middle School geography bee with the correct answer, “rain shadow.”  Charlie will now take a written test that will be submitted for entry in the state geography bee.  The top 100 scorers will compete to determine a state champion on April 9th.  Please congratulate Charlie on a job well done and wish him well on the written test!

The Upper School Director and Deans invite all parents of 8th graders to an Introduction to the Upper School on January 21st at 7:00 p.m.  Spend an evening with us to learn about the exciting opportunities your 8th grader will have in Providence Academy’s Upper School.  We will look into our academic program, as well as college counseling, athletics, fine arts, and extracurricular offerings.  This evening is for parents only; 8th grade students will have an opportunity to explore the benefits of a Providence Upper School Education just one week later.

Technology Night for Middle School Parents
Middle School Parents are invited to attend “Technology 101” presented by our School Resource Officer, Steve Baloun.  Officer Baloun will address technology issues relevant to Middle School age students.  He will cover the importance of supervising the use of the internet by your child, the dangers associated with the misuse of technology, and effective parenting approaches and strategies to keep your child safe.  He will also address the “hot topics” in the Middle School technology world including use of cell phones, texting, and social networking communities.  There will be a Q & A session following his presentation for parents to ask specific questions.

Officer Baloun has a broad background in police work and has served on the Plymouth Police Force since 1990.  He has experience as a patrolman, investigator, K-9 officer, reserve coordinator and school resource worker at Armstrong High School.  In addition, Office Baloun served for over 10 years as a member of the Plymouth Police Department SWAT Team.

Office Baloun also works directly with the Middle School students with the “Netsmarts” program.  The students have attended his workshop educating them on the dangers associated with technology and keeping themselves safe.

We look forward to seeing you Tuesday, February 2nd at 6:30 p.m. in the Lecture Hall. Light refreshments will be served.
