Headmaster’s Notes
Todd R. Flanders

Advent is here.  Come, let us climb the Lord’s mountain, that he may instruct us in his ways, and we may walk in his paths.

*     *     *

A special Advent sale will be held here by Leaflet Missal, in the Gallery this Wednesday, December 5th, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  We are delighted that this famous St. Paul store has agreed to provide us a seasonal shopping opportunity, with a sacred theme.  All may browse through a rich variety of merchandise that must be seen to be appreciated.  Students are also invited to do their own shopping after school.  A portion of sale proceeds will benefit Providence Academy.  For a preview of the items offered by Leaflet, visit their website at www.leafletonline.com

*     *     *

Many students from 8th through 12th grade are volunteering to participate Friday night in the Providence Sleepout.  In addition to raising funds for charities serving the homeless, students will have many opportunities for spiritual growth and fellowship.  Participants will also have the opportunity to attend a special late-night vigil Mass in our chapel for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.  Parent volunteers are welcome to help with set-up, dinner, bonfire, and to simply be available to encourage our students.  To volunteer, please contact Mr. Brian Trexel at (763) 258-2545 or brian.trexel@providenceacademy.org.  Thank you!

Winter athletics are well underway at PA, at every level of competition. Remember to check the rSchoolToday calendar on PA’s website for details.  Or, pick up a large photo sports calendar for your family, available free in the administration offices.  This week’s home varsity events include boys’ hockey and girls’ basketball, both on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.

And Friday brings the annual “Academy Classic” basketball games between Heritage Christian Academy and Providence Academy.  The host site this year is Heritage.  The Classic kicks off with dinner from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.; cost is $5 for adults and $3 for students (children 5 and under eat free).  The girls’ game starts at 6:00 and the boys play at 7:30 p.m., with a traveling trophy awarded to the winners.

Come out and support your Lions!

3rd Annual Skate with the Varsity Toy Drive
Attention skaters of all ages!  The Skate with the Varsity Hockey Team Christmas Toy Drive is this Saturday, December 8th, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.  Bring a new toy for Mary's Place and skate with the Varsity Hockey Team at Plymouth Ice Center’s Rink C.  Enjoy Christmas music, cookies and hot cocoa.  Our PA Lion will be making an appearance on the ice too!  Stay for the junior varsity game after skating.  Everyone is invited—moms, dads, and children.

Changes to Family Contact Information

Please remember to advise school staff in the event any of your family’s contact information changes.  Mailing address, phone number, and email address updates may be directed to Mrs. Courtney Daniel at courtney.daniel@providenceacademy.org or (763) 258-2502.

Donald’s Winter Uniform Trade-In
If your student has already outgrown some of his/her uniform pieces, bring the clothing to Donald’s.  The used uniforms traded in will be donated to needy parochial and public schools and you will receive a credit toward the purchase of new uniform items.  Winter Uniform Trade-In continues through March.  Specific trade-in values are available for review on Donald’s website at www.donaldsuniform.com/wintertrade2007.cfm.

Mitten Trees
Warm hands, warm hearts!  Take a peek in the Lower/Middle School Library.  It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!  The Mitten Trees are back for our seventh year of keeping little hands warm.  PA families are invited to donate a new pair of mittens for our friends at Sabathani Community Center in Minneapolis.  We will decorate the trees through December 12th and deliver the mittens to Sabathani (
www.sabathani.org) in time for their Christmas party on the 14th.  Thank you for sharing the warmth of the Christmas Season.

Musicians/Singers Wanted
Talented members of the Providence community are needed to perform the National Anthem at home basketball games.  Be it by voice or instrument, we would love to hear from interested parties.  Parent/student duets would be outstanding!  To volunteer, or for more information, please contact Mr. Scoob Wagner at (612) 685-2469 or john.wagner@providenceacademy.org

Parent Visitors
All parent visitors are reminded to sign in at the Welcome Desk upon entering the building.  We request your cooperation for the safety of all who are in the building, most importantly, the students.

Parenting with Love & Logic
Discussion Groups
The fourth book discussion group for Parenting with Love & Logic will begin in mid-January.  This book is intended for parents of children ages 2 to 12.  Registration is limited and currently, five spaces remain.  Also in January, for the first time a discussion group will be offered on Parenting with Love & Logic for Teens.  To register, or for more information, contact Lynne Frederickson at lynnefrederickson@yahoo.com.

Poinsettia Pick-Up Reminder
If you ordered a poinsettia plant from the Upper School Student Council, it will be ready for pick-up in the living room area behind the statue of Mary on Thursday, December 6th.  Please make arrangements to pick up your plants by the end of school on Friday, December 7th, so they don’t dry out over the weekend.  Thank you for your support!  Please contact Ms. Diane Hagner with any questions at diane.hagner@providenceadacemy.org or (763) 258-5502.

Sounds of the Season
This year's Middle School Christmas concert will take place on Tuesday, December 11th, and the Upper School Christmas Extravaganza will take place on Friday, December 14th.  Please come out and support our musicians while enjoying the beautiful sounds of Christmas.  Both concerts are free of charge and begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Great Room.

Spirit Store Hours Added for Christmas Shopping
The Spirit Store will be open 30 minutes prior to each of the Christmas Concerts on December 11th,14th,18th and 19th (before both Pre-K/Kindergarten and 3rd through 5th Grade performances).  This is the perfect time to do Christmas shopping for gifts while supporting our great school and students!

Hot, hot, hot are bling T-shirts and sport bags (with a 3- to 4- four day turnaround for personalization).  We have lots of fleece, cool PA hats and mittens for stocking stuffers, and ties for Dad and older brothers (or the Middle School concert).  Remember the stuffed PA Lion with back pack for a tuck-in gift!  There are golf shirts if you are getting away for a warm weather break (lucky you!) over the holidays or for the sooner-than-you-think spring break!

Come early to check it out!  Checks, cash and credit cards are accepted.  Regular store hours are 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and 3:15 to 3:45 p.m. on Thursdays.  Thank you to all families and friends for their support so far this year.

Science Olympiad
The 2007-08 Science Olympiad Club meets on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Mr. Boone's engineering lab. Over 20 students from 6th through 9th Grade have signed up to work on science projects from the National Science Olympiad Competition.  The regional tournament will be held at Providence Academy on Saturday, February 2nd from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Many parent volunteers will be needed to help our club host 150 to 200 middleschoolers from seven other area schools.

It's not too late to join the club!  Besides competitions, there are plans to take field trips to cool science places around the city.  Club meeting times are very flexible and students can work on projects on days other than Tuesday afternoon.  Interested students should talk to Mr. Fisher, Mr. Boone, or Mrs. Sheehan and check out the National Science Olympiad website at www.soinc.org for more information on the program.

Christmas Gifts for Teachers
The Christmas season is fast approaching, and with it brings the desire for many of us to thank the teaching staff for the blessing they are to our children.  Teacher Christmas gifts were discussed at the last PAPA meeting and the parent community voted on a way to unify gift giving this season.  Families who wish to participate may donate up to $15 per child.  Contributions will be consolidated and used to purchase Visa gift cards for all Providence teaching staff (Pre-K through 12th Grade), and presented to the staff at the faculty Holiday Breakfast.

Collection envelopes will be located in the Administration and Upper School offices December 3rd through December 13th.  Checks should be made out to “PAPA.”  If you have more than one student, simply combine your contribution into one check.   Thank you, and have a blessed holiday season!

College Counselor's Corner

Mrs. Hogan returns this week!  She will be working mornings and Ms. Kelly will be here in the afternoons this week.  Next week will be business as usual as Mrs. Hogan returns to Providence full time.  Watch for pictures of Nancy Ann, the littlest Hogan.

A Note from Ms. Kelly:  Thanks to each of you who have made my job so enjoyable these past months.  Seniors, parents, faculty, and staff have all been patient and supportive.  You have a very special community of learners here at Providence Academy and I have been honored to share the excitement of the college search process with many of you.  Best wishes for each of your futures!

Seniors
Seniors and their parents are encouraged to attend the Financial Aid Information Night this Wednesday, December 5th, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Upper School Lecture Hall.  Kathy Ruby, Director of Financial Aid for St. Olaf College, will be our guest presenter.

December is the time to complete those college applications!  Seniors should be aware by now that they need to complete a transcript request form for each school to which they apply.  These are available in the Upper School office and should be turned in approximately two weeks before any college deadline.  Remember to plan around the holiday schedule at school.  Any applications with deadlines on or before January 15th should be submitted to College Counseling no later than December 7th.  That is the end of this week.

Freshmen
All freshmen will take the PLAN exam on Thursday, December 20th. The PLAN is a pre-ACT exam administered to help familiarize students with college entrance test content and format, to give them a feel for timed testing, as well as to help them identify areas of academic strength and weakness.  PLAN exam information will be distributed to freshman later this week.
