Last week brought spectacular concert
performances by Middle and Upper School students. What a wonderful way
to enjoy the sounds of Christmas! Be sure to tune in to Relevant Radio
(1330 AM) on Christmas day, where portions of PA’s Upper School
Christmas Extravaganza will be re-broadcast, beginning at 1:30 p.m. The
band, choir, and string ensembles will be featured on Relevant’s
Christmas in Our Town
program.
This week includes its fair share of
activity and excitement as Lower School students prepare to welcome the
Christ child by sharing their gifts of song and music with parents,
grandparents and friends. The 1st and 2nd Grade
Christmas music performance takes place tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. in the
Great Room. On Wednesday, students in Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten
will present Come to the Manger
from 2:15 to 3:00 p.m. and 3rd through 5th
Graders will perform On Our Way to
Bethlehem at 7:00 p.m.

Also this week, Upper School faculty are
eager to greet alumni who have been invited to return to PA on
Thursday. There will be a luncheon from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the
Lecture Hall, followed by time to visit with friends, Mr. Ferdinandt and
myself. We all look forward to hearing about their college
experiences. Graduates are also invited to celebrate Mass at 1:45 p.m.
in the chapel. If there are alumni in your family, please spread the
word and ask them to RSVP by the end of the day tomorrow to Mrs. Kelly
Wilder at
kelly.wilder@providenceacademy.org

Last week our own Mr. Kurt Jaeger was
named “Athletics Director of the Year” in Section 4A of the state high
school league (MSHSL). Mr. Jaeger is one of 8 class A AD’s (out of 480+
affiliated schools) so honored this year. Congratulations, Coach!

Sincere thanks to the PA families who have
already contributed to the Annual Fund. The campaign is making
wonderful progress toward the goal of increasing participation and we
are grateful for all contributions, in any amount. If you have not yet
returned your Annual Fund envelope, please keep PA in mind during your
year-end charitable giving. Consider making a gift before December 31st
to qualify for a tax deduction in 2007. To contribute to the Annual
Fund, or for additional information, please contact Dawn Schommer at
(763) 258-2516 or
dawn.schommer@providenceacademy.org.

We all look forward to
the return of students on Monday, January 7th. Until then,

Drop Off/Pick Up Reminder
For the safety of our students, parents are reminded to adhere to the
school’s drop off and pick up procedures. No parking is allowed along the
parking lot curb at any time. Drivers in all carpool lines are asked to remain
in their cars to maintain traffic flow. In the event you decide to enter the
school to drop off or pick up your student, you are asked to park in the lot.
For detailed information, please refer to page 14 of the Parent/ Student
Handbook.
Financial Aid Applications Due March 1st
Providence Academy will use TADS, Tuition Aid Data Services, again
this year for financial aid applications. If you would like to apply for
need-based financial aid, please pick up a form in the Student Services Office
or fill out the electronic form at
www.tuitionaid.com. A copy of your Form 1040 and a W-2 must also be mailed
or faxed to the TADS office. Families may use their 2007 tax return for the
required information or can use their 2006 tax return, provided that family
income has not changed by more than 5% from the prior year. This year’s TADS
fee is $29.00. An extra form is required for families that own a business or
farm.
Providence acquires financial aid funds from the generous
donations of our community through the annual fund and the spring gala.
Financial aid priority is given to high school students and current families
that run into short-term financial difficulty.
The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis also offers
financial aid grants to those families who have students in Catholic high
schools on an archdiocesan wide basis. TADS automatically includes your
application in both financial aid pools. For more information about financial
aid, please call (763) 258-2504.
First Round Admissions Application Deadline
Please remind all siblings, friends and neighbors who are interested in
attending Providence that the first round application deadline is January 19th.
This is also the Saturday that the Middle and Upper School entrance exam is
offered in the Great Room. The test is scheduled for 8:30-11:45 a.m. and
students need a reservation to sit for the exam. Students that submit their
application by January 19th, should try to complete their admissions
application file by mid-February and will be notified of their acceptance status
by March 1st. Siblings that submit an application after January 19th
will forfeit their priority application status. Please call the Admissions
Office at (763) 258-2502 for more information.
Flu Season Q&A
For information on influenza, Mrs. Murphy suggests visiting the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention website at
http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/season.htm. This link provides helpful
questions and answers that will be updated as the flu season progresses.
Lost & Found
Students are reminded to check the Lost & Found
for personal items before the Christmas break. There are many pieces of
clothing, outerwear and books waiting to be reunited with their owners.
New at Providence in 2008!
Because of the growing interest in Love & Logic, past and
current participants in the book discussion groups, as well as those who have
read the book on their own, are invited to come together to fine-tune their
parenting skills. We will be gathering once a month to share ideas and laughs
as we explore “natural consequences” in our parenting strategies. Join us from
1:30 to 3:00 p.m. in the Seminar Room, beginning January 14th.
Thereafter, meetings will take place on the first Monday of the month. Feel
free to come for each session or whenever your schedule allows.
News for Golfers
Coach Mike Seiffert is offering private and group golf instruction for PA
students and families during the winter months at Long Lake Golf Dome. To
register, or for more details, contact Coach Seiffert at michael.seiffert@providenceacademy.org
or (763) 258-2552. A flyer is also available in the Student Services office.
Parent Visitors
All parent visitors are reminded to sign in at
the Welcome Desk upon entering the building. We request your cooperation for
the safety of all who are in the building, most importantly, the students.
Parenting with Love & Logic Discussion Groups
There has been a great response to the Love &
Logic book discussion groups. The teen groups will meet on Thursdays and
Fridays from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., beginning January 10th and 11th.
The Friday group is full; two spots remain in the Thursday group. The
adolescent group (children ages 2 to 12) will meet Wednesdays from 2:00 to 3:00
p.m., beginning January 9th. There are three openings available. To
register, or for more information, contact Lynne Frederickson at
lynnefrederickson@yahoo.com.
Sectional Debate Tournament Comes to PA
Providence Academy has accepted a special
opportunity to host this year’s Sectional Tournament for Lincoln Douglas and
Policy Debate. In October of 2006, PA hosted a tournament for fellow schools in
Classic debate. This year’s tournament is much bigger. Now that PA is a member
of the National Forensic League, we have stepped onto the national stage.
Roughly 170 people will attend this year, with 110 students from area schools
competing. Each school can enter only 2 students. The tournament will occur
over two days, Tuesday and Wednesday, January 8th and 9th,
from 3:30-10:00 p.m. The event is open to limited attendance; for details,
please contact Mr. Michael Tiffany at
michael.tiffany@providenceacademy.org or (763) 258-2583.
Share the Good “News”
PA students are involved in many wonderful endeavors, both here on campus and in
their free time. Won’t you share the good “news”? The Student Services office
would like to know in advance if your child will be involved in a newsworthy
event, participating in a distinctive extracurricular activity, or receiving
special recognition. If so, please advise Mrs. Courtney Daniel at
courtney.daniel@providenceacademy.org
Spirit Store Hours Added for Christmas Shopping
The Spirit Store will be open 30 minutes prior
to each of the Christmas Concerts on December 18th and 19th
(before both PreK/Kindergarten and 3rd through 5th Grade
performances). This is the perfect time to do Christmas shopping for gifts
while supporting our great school and students!
Checks, cash and credit cards are accepted. Regular store
hours are 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and 3:15
to 3:45 p.m. on Thursdays. Thank you to all families and friends for their
support so far this year.

Attention Mac Users!
A number of parents who
use newer Macintosh computers (computers that use "Safari" as the internet
browser) have had difficulty viewing and/or logging into Net Classroom. In
order to solve this challenge, Macintosh users may download a new web browser
that is available for free from download.com. The browser, called "Mozilla
Firefox," has been well received in the user community and is a nice alternative
to Safari.
Before downloading the new browser, be sure your operating
system will work with it—Mac OS 10.4.0 and above will run it. The application
is available at

C ollege Counselor's Corner
Seniors
Reminder: Last call for transcript requests for December and
January college admission deadlines. Given the Christmas break, all seniors
must submit their transcript requests (the “yellow forms”) to the College
Counseling Office absolutely no later than Wednesday, December 19th.
A number of seniors have already received (or will receive
this week) notification of acceptances to various colleges, yet many students
are still in a waiting period for admission decisions. Colleges have said that
they have, yet again, received a record number of applications, so decisions may
be even slower in coming. Please be patient—the National Candidate's Reply
Deadline is May 1, 2008.
Juniors
REMINDER: The Providence ACT
Prep Course registration deadline is Wednesday, December 19th.
The course will be taught by Providence faculty on each of the
following three Saturdays: January 19th (Science), January 26th
(Math), and February 2nd (English/Writing) in preparation for the
February 9th ACT exam. All juniors were given the ACT Prep
registration form last week with their PSAT results. Please note a time
change; the January 26th ACT Prep session (Math) will be held in the
afternoon to accommodate any morning SAT test takers.
Mrs. Hogan will be meeting with juniors after the Christmas
break to discuss individual test scores and college planning. Parents are
invited to attend individual meetings, after receiving and submitting a parent
college counseling questionnaire (which will be mailed in early January).
Juniors should plan to take at least one ACT and one SAT exam in the spring.
For test preparation options/suggestions, please contact the College Counseling
Office.
Juniors are encouraged to continue visiting
colleges, both locally and nationally. When planning a spring break trip, for
example, try to include a college visit. Also, PA students do not have school
on Martin Luther King Day (January 21st) and Presidents’ Day
(February 18th), which provides more college visit opportunities,
assuming that the colleges offer visits (and many do!). It is important to
contact the Office of Undergraduate Admission at each college at least two weeks
in advance to set up a visit, and advisable to meet with the admission
representative, in addition to attending the information session and taking the
tour.
Freshmen and Sophomores
Sophomores who took the PSAT and PLAN in October/November and freshmen who
took the PLAN exam in December will receive their scores in January.
