About the Academy

Shown above is a Roman mask from an elaborate parade helmet.  This mask was once part of a cavalry sports or parade helmet worn by mounted soldiers during the Hippika Gymnasia, the ritual performance of complex military maneuvers.  It represents the highly classicized head of either an Amazon or a female sea creature.  Her  helmet is decorated with a relief figure of Oceanus, god of the river that was believed to encircle the earth.  On either side of her are sea creatures with their heads raised.  The mask is thought to be from the late 1st or early 2nd century A.D.
