Love & Logic News for 2008-09
The upcoming school
year will provide parents with a number of opportunities to join parenting
discussion groups, based on the Love & Logic
series by Foster and
Cline. These books have been applauded for providing “important concepts and
practical solutions to help children become emotionally, socially and morally
healthy.”
Sessions geared toward
parents of adolescents and teens will be again be offered. Also, in response to
several requests, two new groups will be added in 2008-09: evening discussions
and a discussion group for parents of college students.
Registration will take
place in the fall. Questions about Love & Logic may be directed to Mrs.
Lynne Frederickson at
lynnefrederickson@yahoo.com.

Your Opinion Counts! Complete the ISACS Survey by May 5th
Providence Academy is in the process of gathering opinions from its
constituency with the annual Independent Schools Association of the Central
States (ISACS) satisfaction survey. It is our goal to let every voice be
heard! The survey will be administered both at school functions and by mail to
make it easy for all to complete.
Providence undertakes the survey as part of the ISACS
accreditation process. The results of the survey are very important for renewal
of our accreditation, the Academy’s self analysis, and other long-term planning.
Our Board of Directors, faculty, administrative staff,
parents, students and alumni are all asked to complete a survey. To be more
accurate in responses, we are asking parents to fill out one survey per child
attending Providence Academy. This will enable parents with children in
different grades to reflect varying opinions on survey topics.
The survey should take about 15 minutes to complete. Blue
or black ink can be used to fill out the answer form. All surveys should be
mailed or returned to the Administrative Office by May 5th. If, for
some reason, you do not receive a survey in the next two weeks, please call Mrs.
Julie Kennedy at (763) 258-2506.
Please remember the due date: May 5th!

General College Fair
Information
What Exactly
IS a College Fair?
College admission (and
alumni) representatives participate in college fairs to promote their schools’
opportunities and to pre-screen prospective students for their respective
institutions. College fairs range from small, high school or community-based
events to large regional expositions held at major convention centers. Most
college fairs consist of booths or tables manned by recruiters or other
representatives (often alumni) from each college or university.
Sample Questions for Student Exploration Before Attending a College Fair:
- Do
you want to attend a four-year college? Public or private? Co-ed or single
sex?
- What
size school do you want to attend?
- What
programs of study are you considering?
- How
far from home do you want to go?
- Do
you wish to participate in any specific extra-curricular activities or
athletics?
- Do
you want to attend a school in an urban, suburban or rural environment?
- Do
you require any special services (i.e., tutoring, note takers, readers,
etc.)
- What
type of social and spiritual life are you looking for on campus?
- Are
you looking for a strong academic program with access to faculty?
Mapping Out a Strategy
Before you attend the fair, make sure you have
the following supplies: a small notebook with your list of colleges and
questions you want to ask, a pen, and a spacious backpack to hold all of the
college information you will be collecting.
Recognize that you will have a limited amount of
time with college representatives. Make your few minutes with each person
valuable by asking open-ended, specific questions. Write up a short list of
questions ahead of time, and, to compare several schools, ask the same questions
at each table.
Parents and
Students Teaming Up
Students with parents planning to attend the college fair should devise a
strategic plan ahead of time. You may decide to split up—perhaps a parent can
gather information from a few schools in which you have less interest so you can
visit with other colleges. Another option is staying together for part or all
of time. Finally, be adventurous! Do not just focus on “name” schools. You may
find that a school you have never heard of offers the exact major, program,
etc., that you're seeking.
