Day in their college search.
General College Fair
Information
What Exactly
IS a College Fair?
College admission (and alumni)
representatives participate in college fairs to promote their schools’
opportunities and to pre-screen prospective students for their respective
institutions. College fairs range from small, high school or community-based
events to large regional expositions held at major convention centers. Most
college fairs consist of booths or tables manned by recruiters or other
representatives from each college or university.
Sample Questions for Student Exploration Before Attending a College Fair:
- Do
you want to attend a four-year college? Public or private? Co-ed or single
sex?
- What
size school do you want to attend?
- What
programs of study are you considering?
- How
far from home do you want to go?
- Do
you wish to participate in any specific extra-curricular activities or
athletics?
- Do
you want to attend a school in an urban, suburban or rural environment?
- Do
you require any special services (i.e., tutoring, note takers, readers,
etc.)
- What
type of social and spiritual life are you looking for on campus?
- Are
you looking for a strong academic program with access to faculty?
Mapping Out a Strategy
Before you attend the fair, make sure you have
the following supplies: a small notebook with your list of colleges and
questions you want to ask, a pen, and a spacious backpack to hold all of the
college information you will be collecting.
Recognize that you will have a limited amount of
time with college representatives. Make your few minutes with each person
valuable by asking open-ended, specific questions. Write up a short list of
questions ahead of time, and, to compare several schools, ask the same questions
at each table.
Teaming Up with
a Parent
Students with parents planning to attend the college fair should devise a
strategic plan ahead of time. You may decide to split up—perhaps a parent can
gather information from a few schools in which you have less interest so you can
visit with other colleges. Another option is staying together for part or all
of time. Finally, be adventurous! Do not just focus on “name” schools. You may
find that a school you have never heard of offers the exact major, program,
etc., that you're seeking.
