Providence Academy Running Club Raises $3000

(June 3rd, 2009) In late May the Providence Academy Running Club hosted its second annual Laps For Charity event.  Club members ran to earn money for New Life Family Services, an organization specializing in parenting education courses for new mothers.  Through New Life’s reward-based program participants are provided children’s items in exchange for completed course work.

Running Club, in its second year as a Providence Academy extra-curricular activity, continued its focus on getting fit, having fun and serving the community.  Club goers engaged in bi-weekly fun runs including nature hikes, a relay-run, an exhausting game of Sharks & Minnows and a scavenger hunt.  Club supervisor and 5th grade teacher Rachel Fogle worked to make the meets fun and rewarding for all.

During Laps for Charity over 50 participants gathered to run around the Providence track as many times as possible.  Pledge amounts per lap completed were collected by students from neighbors, friends and family.  “My student really took pride in collecting pledges for the run-a-thon.  It made her feel good to be able to do something to help the women of New Life Family Services.  I was so proud of her,” said a PA parent.

Runners rounded the track multiple times, most running between 3 and 4 miles.  Ten students ran 5 or more miles and one determined young man, 3rd grade student, ran 6.5 miles logging the events longest distance.  “We had a blast and the kids ran their hearts out,” said Fogle.

“I wanted to run more,” said a PA 5th grade student, “Everyone just kept going and no one wanted to stop running.  It felt really good to earn money to help others.”

Overall the children ran 110 miles and earned $3000 for New Life Family Services.  The growing success of the event has encouraged participants and staff to continue Laps for Charity in future school years.

Fifth grade students enjoy some camaraderie during the second annual Providence Academy Running Club’s Laps for Charity.
