Providence Academy Hosts Science Olympiad

(February 10th, 2009) Recently Providence Academy played host to the Science Olympiad Regional Tournament.  Thirteen teams representing ten schools spent a day at Providence competing in ten different science events.  Science Olympiad is a competitive science program open to students enrolled at area middle schools.

Participation in the tournament included teams from host school Providence Academy as well as teams from Capital Hill, Kenwood Trails, Delano MS, Woodbury Junior High School, and others.  Over two hundred 6th-9th grade students participated to win individual medals and team trophies.  Competitive events such as bridge design, catapult and model plane construction, reptile identification, anatomy, science crime-busters, and meteorology gave students an opportunity to showcase their scientific know-how.  Also present at the event were representatives from the Minneapolis Model Airplane Club who aided participants with expert advice in the areas of plane construction and flight.

In individual competition Providence Academy students won first place medals in the Science Crime-busters and Anatomy competitions.  Ninth grade students Alexa Azarian and Rachel Lunneborg also took home first place individual medals for their catapult construction. Second place awards were given in two areas including a Physical Science Lab in which the students constructed a wind powered turbine from a CD and a small motor.  A fourth place win was earned by Connor Killion and Max Tahija for their accomplishment in Bridge Design.

Science Olympiad members are now focused on the State Tournament, which is set to be held March 7th, 2009 on the University of St. Thomas campus.  The event will include over 400 students from twenty-five schools.  Students will be working hard to prepare in the added events of Robots, Ecology, Fossil ID and more.
