Providence Student Punches Out A Win(December 19th, 2008) – Six year-old Providence Academy first grade student, Audra Kaczmarek, has done it again. For the 4th year running the youngster has pecked out a winning turkey for the Star Tribune’s annual turkey coloring contest. Kaczmarek, of Plymouth, plucked up a first place prize for the 5-8 year-old category. Kaczmarek’s previous wins include a 2007 2nd place finish in the same category as well as 2nd and 1st place wins in the 0-4 year-old category in 2005 and 2006 respectively. This year Kaczmarek used differing sizes of colored paper punches to cover the turkey in feathered fashion. Using toothpicks to maneuver the punches into alignment, Kaczmarek covered the bird entirely and added googly eyes for effect. Monica Kaczmarek, Audra’s mom, said she stood by for moral support and guidance. “Each feather took over an hour! It was very labor intensive, but Audra stuck to it, and did a great job.” For the first time since they began entering the contest, the Kaczmarek family requested that the Star Tribune return the turkey poster if it wasn’t too much trouble. “I really want to frame this one,” said Mrs. Kaczmarek, “It was so wonderful of them to send it back to us.” She plans to hang it in their home mentioning that it might be the last time they enter the contest. “It was fun,” said the younger Kaczmarek, “but it took long time!” Kaczmarek brought her original design in to school to share her accomplishment. Second grade classmates and teacher, Sarah Millerbernd, examined the design with awe. “It’s absolutely perfect,” said Millerbernd. Kaczmarek smiled and modestly added, “Nothing is perfect, but it is pretty good.”
