Providence Academy Student Wins Plymouth Fire Prevention Poster ContestNovember 25th, 2008) –This week Providence Academy 4th grade student, Edmund Hoes, was honored by the Plymouth Fire Department for his fire prevention poster “Unplug a Wire to Prevent a Fire.” November is National Fire Prevention Month and the Plymouth FD sponsored its annual Fire Prevention Poster Contest. The contest was open to all 4th and 5th grade students in the Plymouth area. When asked how he decided on his poster theme Hoes said, “I came up with it sitting at the dinner table where I noticed that my mom’s cell phone had been plugged in too long!” The poster displays regular household items that a person might forget to unplug and have been known to cause fires including a toaster and a steam iron. Hoes wanted to make the point that there are things we can unplug when not in use which may prevent a fire. Four firefighters from the Plymouth Fire Department visited Providence to present Hoes with his award. The class watched the presentation and got to take a look at the fire truck the men drove onto campus. “I am really happy I won,” said Hoes, adding, “It’s the first time I’ve won something like this!” Not certain what he’ll do with his winnings Hoes has contemplated donating a portion back to the fire department, and using the rest to get something he’s been wanting.
