Providence Academy Student Wins Plymouth Fire Prevention Poster Contest

November 25^th, 2008) –This week Providence Academy 4^th grade student, Edmund Hoes, was honored by the Plymouth Fire Department for his fire prevention poster “Unplug a Wire to Prevent a Fire.”  November is National Fire Prevention Month and the Plymouth FD sponsored its annual Fire Prevention Poster Contest.  The contest was open to all 4^th and 5^th grade students in the Plymouth area. 

When asked how he decided on his poster theme Hoes said, “I came up with it sitting at the dinner table where I noticed that my mom’s cell phone had been plugged in too long!”  The poster displays regular household items that a person might forget to unplug and have been known to cause fires including a toaster and a steam iron.  Hoes wanted to make the point that there are things we can unplug when not in use which may prevent a fire.

Four firefighters from the Plymouth Fire Department visited Providence to present Hoes with his award.  The class watched the presentation and got to take a look at the fire truck the men drove onto campus.  “I am really happy I won,” said Hoes, adding, “It’s the first time I’ve won something like this!”  Not certain what he’ll do with his winnings Hoes has contemplated donating a portion back to the fire department, and using the rest to get something he’s been wanting.
