Providence Academy Students Named AP Scholars

(October 13th, 2008) Recently, the College Board gave official AP Scholar recognition to students with high achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program Exams.  Providence Academy, becoming more widely recognized in college admission offices for its strong college-prep curriculum, has successfully prepared many interested students to take the optional exams offered annually in May.

Anne Gottwalt, Scott Walls, and Mary Cummins, all members of the Class of 2008, were named the Academy’s first ever AP Scholars with Distinction.  This honor requires a student to score an average of 3.5 (on a 5 point scale), and no less than a 3 on any combination of five (or more) exams. A noteworthy distinction on Gottwalt’s score report was five different tests all scoring fives.  Gottwalt was also Providence Academy’s 2007-08 Valedictorian.

Those students who scored an average of 3.25 or higher with no less than a score of 3 on any of four exams were announced as AP Scholars with Honors.  Students from the Academy, also all graduates of the Class of 2008, were: Katie Finley, Michael George, Michael Offerman, and Jimmy Simonse.

To earn recognition as an AP Scholar, students had to score an average of 3 or higher, with no less than a score of 3 on any of three exams. Those being named in this category from the Class of 2008 were: Lars Gilyard, Matt Villaume, Natasha Topoluk, and Jaclyn Walker.  Future graduate, Kristen Seligman, ’09, was also recognized in this group.

“It is important to note that, while we do not offer AP classes within our curriculum, our students are adequately prepped for success on these exams, and, thus, in a position to receive college credit and/or advanced placement at various colleges and universities.  We are certainly pleased that our students and graduates demonstrate excellence in the Advanced Placement arena,” said Providence Academy College Counselor, Sarah Hogan.
