Providence Academy Head of School Meets Radio Personality Dr. Bill Bennett(October 6th, 2008) – Popular radio personality and talk show host Dr. William J. Bennett was recently in the Twin Cities taking time from his busy schedule to meet with area educators to discuss his books including a textbook on American history. The text, entitled America: The Last Best Hope, is used in the American History classrooms at Providence Academy. Providence Academy History teacher Dr. Bernard Carpenter implemented the use of Bennett’s text because of its balance and the fairness in its delivery and content. ‘America: The Last Best Hope’ was chosen by the Academy for a number of reasons including its objective nature, its narrative format and its ability to illustrate how America has consistently championed freedom. “The text, rich in interesting anecdotes, really enables the students to study the best aspects of American culture and history,” said Carpenter. Bennett, who hosts a nationally syndicated radio broadcast aired in the cities daily from 5-8am on AM 1280 The Patriot, met briefly with Providence Headmaster Dr. Todd R. Flanders during his visit. Bennett expressed considerable interest in the school’s adoption of his texts. Flanders said that “the books read like novels, and good ones at that. Bennett wasn’t writing for classrooms only, but for pleasure reading. Students are sometimes surprised to learn that some of us actually buy history books to read for fun. Bennett’s engaging work helps give them a sense of why we would do such a seemingly strange thing.”
Dr. William J. Bennett discussed his new textbook on American history with Dr. Todd R. Flanders, headmaster of Providence Academy.
