Lions for Life Pause to Remember September 11th, 2001

PLYMOUTH, MN (September 11th, 2008) – Members of the Providence Academy co-curricular club, Lions for Life, created a momentous display in honor of those who lost their lives in the attacks of September 11th, 2001.  Students placed 2,977 American flags lining the schools main boulevard, one flag representing each life tragically lost on that day.  The scene truly produced a cause for pause and reflection.  “The visual impact is totally amazing and heart wrenching all at the same time,” said Genevieve McCarthy, a Providence tenth grade student and member of Lions for Life.

Lions for Life student leaders Emily Prather, Sophie Carr and Angelica Boemer organized the display.  They worked with the help of over 25 volunteers to place the flags.  When asked about the choice to construct a visual presentation Prather said “It was a way for us to show respect for those who lost their lives, as well as for their loved ones.”  “Not only is a tribute to the families but it serves as a reminder that we must never forget,” added Carr.

Support for the vision was lent by the 9/11 Never Forget Project.  The project provided buttons worn by students and staff, and signage placed adjacent to the flags.  Since 2003 the project has helped schools and colleges unite their campuses in an effort to properly remember the victims of the 9/11 attacks.

Other events allowing students time for reflection included a moment of silence occurring at 9:11am, and the screening of a documentary aimed at informing viewers about the events that lead up to the attack on US soil.  Said Prather, “It is the mission of Lions for Life to show respect for life in all stages.  It was so important to offer the campus a patriotic and respectful way to memorialize those who perished in the attacks seven years ago.”

Providence Academy students lined the boulevard with 2,977 flags, remembering those who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks.
