Director's Challenge Creates Reading Enthusiasts at Providence Academy

(June 3, 2008) A year long Lower School reading program ended in the first week of June with 182 students meeting the challenge requirements for their grade.  Providence’s Lower School Director, Nancy Galgano, created the Director’s Reading Challenge as a way to promote reading across the elementary grades.  “The students are attracted to the competitive aspect of the challenge and over time they develop or strengthen their love for reading.  Encouraging students to be life long readers is the real goal.”

To meet the challenge, students from Kindergarten to fifth grade met various grade level requirements.  While the youngest students read an extra fifteen minutes per night, the fourth grade students were required to read 20 books, each with a one-page book report.  The fifth grade students set their own monthly goals, with a minimum goal of 250 pages per month of additional reading.  The highest goal set and reached by a fifth grade student was 4,000 pages per month.

Excitement ensued as gold medals, four inches in diameter, where awarded on June 2nd to each child who met the Director’s Reading Challenge in a presentation ceremony.  Galgano noted, “In many cases, this reading medal is the first award that a child has earned.  It promotes literacy while developing a huge sense of accomplishment.  We can “read” the delight on our students’ faces.”

Providence Academy second grade student, Kole DeRosier of Maple Grove, receives his Director’s Reading Challenge medal from Lower School Director, Mrs. Nancy Galgano.
