Providence Academy Hosts Second Annual College Fair(April 17th, 2008) – Providence Academy will host its second annual College Fair on Wednesday, April 23. Representatives from 100 of the nation’s finest colleges, universities, and military academies will be on hand to meet with students, parents, and members of the Academy’s faculty and staff. Admissions representatives from schools including Princeton, The United States Naval Academy, Yale, Notre Dame, Boston College, The University of Wisconsin-Madison and others will share information about their institutions and answer questions about the college admissions process. “University representatives are very interested in meeting students from strong college preparatory schools like Providence because they make great candidates for admission and scholarship,” said Sarah Hogan, Coordinator of College Counseling at the Academy. “Providence offers terrific preparation particularly for selective post-secondary programs precisely because of its dedication to providing academic excellence and a strong social and spiritual foundation. To colleges, this translates into competitive applicants who are ‘the whole package’. Providence students are articulate, well-read, athletic, musical, artistic and faith-filled.” The college-counseling program at Providence Academy is designed to help students and their families navigate the complex and competitive college admission process. At the Academy students receive individualized college counseling coupled with program offerings including multiple information nights and seminars, leadership resume development, personal statement and general essay-writing support, admission interview preparation and assistance in applying for scholarships and financial aid. This year Providence seniors have enjoyed a number of notable successes during the college admission process. Over 40 students of the Academy’s 59 graduating seniors have reported earning significant scholarships from partial to full tuition awards. One student was honored with a full-tuition Presidential Scholarship to Boston College. Only 15 students of Boston College’s 31,000 applicants were chosen for this prestigious award. Also significant were the number of multiple admits to colleges like Duke, Northwestern and Johns Hopkins University. Not to mention seven students were accepted to both Boston College and Notre Dame. “The significance of these numbers is that out of ten applicants, seven were accepted making PA’s acceptance rate 70%. At a school like Notre Dame, which typically has an acceptance rate of about 25%, the 70% acceptance rate is very distinguishing,” said Hogan. Providence juniors and their families are looking forward to the 2008 College Fair as an opportunity to continue on their journey into higher education. “As the seniors are closing the post-secondary decision process, it becomes more and more about the current junior class. The fair gives juniors a chance to look at varying options: 4-year private or public schools, liberal arts educations, science and technology, fine arts programs and more. A good cross section of quality programs will be represented. This will help students move forward,” said Hogan, “And we hope to continue with excellent results as set forth by previous graduating classes.”
