A Mind for Math Equals A Win At Local Math Counts Competition

(April 10th, 2008) – Scott Stankey, a Providence Academy sixth grade student, placed seventh overall in individual competition at the City of the Lakes Chapter Math Counts Tournament.   Math Counts has been recognized as the premier National math competition for 6th-8th grade students.  This year the four-round team competition was sponsored by engineering firms like Medtronic, 3M, TI, Lockheed and NASA.

During the first three rounds of competition students answered math questions of varying topics and degrees of difficulty, earning individual and team recognition.  Stankey’s seventh place individual rank earned him a spot in the fourth and final fast-paced Countdown Round.  In head-to-head competition Stankey triumphed over eleven other top individual competitors.  “Winning first prize in the Countdown was really cool,” said Stankey of his first place trophy.

Stankey, of Eden Prairie, was one of eight students on Providence Academy’s Math Counts team.  It was his first year as part of the team, but he has always had a mind and a talent for mathematics.  Since coming to Providence, Stankey has been taught by a private math tutor, Mr. Ben Blackhawk who is also a PA instructor.  Blackhawk has helped nurture Stankeys expanding math skills.  “Scott is incredibly gifted,” said Blackhawk.  Stankey is currently enrolled in Honors Geometry at Providence, a course generally offered to high achieving tenth grade students.

The other Math Counts competitors from the Academy included Patrick Beuhler, Steven Dobbs, Rachel Maguire, Ryan Stocking, Patrick Gage, Emma Lyons and Evan Steinhauser.  Only two of the eight participants will graduate out of eligibility this year, and the young PA Math Counts team looks to a bright future with six strong remaining members.  With drive, determination and the true blessing of a mind for math, Stankey is sure to stand out as a team leader over the next two years.

Scott Stankey, a Providence Academy 6th grader from Eden Prairie, won first place in the Final Countdown Round at the City of the Lakes Chapter Math Counts Competition.
