"SnowDay" Celebrates Minnesota Winters

(February 29th, 2007) – According to meteorologists, the average snowfall over the past 122 years in the Twin Cities is 45.8 inches.  According to Providence Academy students, any amount of snow is fun.  Although school has not been called off due to a heavy snowfall all winter, a “snow day” took place just the same.

During the last week of February, students in grades 6-8 went snow-tubing at the Elm Creek Park Reserve located in Maple Grove.  After sampling the tubing hill’s degree of decline, it didn’t take long for students to begin optimizing the speed of their downhill runs.  Tubing lanes were filled with handheld chains of tubes and screams of delight.  “The more tubes we link together, the faster we go”, explained Hannah Lyons who is currently in the eighth grade.

Providence Academy high school students took a day off of their usual lessons to visit Afton Alps ski area.  Snowboarding, downhill skiing and cross-country skiing were the order of the day, on a day where the temperature crested to the mid-twenties.  While some say that the best thing about a Minnesota winter is April, students at Providence embraced their “snow day” with the passion of true Minnesota natives.  “It’s the best day of the school year,” claimed Lyons.
