Providence Academy Students Named National Merit Finalists(February 29th, 2007) – Providence Academy seniors Chris Kopp of Medina and Abby Letak of Plymouth were recently honored as National Merit Scholarship Finalists. Kopp and Letak, part of the 60 member class of 2008, were named semi-finalists after achieving high scores on their PSAT exams. To earn spots as finalists, the students completed applications and included personalized recommendations from their high school principal. Semi-finalists had to continue a high level of academic achievement indicated by maintaining a consistent grade point average and posting top marks on their SAT exams. Finally, all finalist applicants were required to continue their preparations to enter college in the fall of 2008. In addition to her National Merit Finalist recognition, Letak was chosen from a pool of over 31,000 applicants to be honored with a Boston College Presidential Scholarship offered to only fifteen potential freshmen each year. “It is really a very distinct achievement,” said Providence Academy College Counselor, Sarah Hogan. “She is being individually recognized out of such a large pool of excellence.” Letak and Kopp will receive final notification of their National Merit Scholarship awards in mid-March. The NMS program offers select finalists $2,500 awards presented on the consideration of merit alone.
