Providence Academy Students Win Regional Science Olympiad Awards(February 14th, 2007) – Providence Academy recently hosted the west suburban Regional Science Olympiad tournament. Teams from Capitol Hill, Delano, Kenwood Trail and Jedlick Middle Schools joined the Providence Academy team in competition. All the students put their best effort forth in order to claim places in the State Tournament. Science Olympiad is one of Providence Academy’s extra-curricular offerings whose varying topics and competition attract many students each year. Hailey Bork, a Providence 6th grader, was new to Science Olympiad this school year. When asked what she’s liked best about the program Bork said, “It’s been really great! It gets me involved and brings all of us closer to our friends while we learn about tons of new things in science.” Students worked diligently in preparation for their various competitions. School teams were broken down into project sub-teams, and students worked in pairs on seven specific subjects areas. At the Regional competition Providence students placed in Metric Mastery, Rocks and Minerals, Amphibians and Reptiles, Meteorology, Science Crime-Busters, Balloon-Launch Glider and Mystery Architecture. The combination of wins in the different categories gave students enough points to place second overall and secure a spot in the State competition, which will take place at the University of St. Thomas on March 8th, 2008. Providence Students will compete against regional winners from over 25 other Minnesota middle schools. Bork, who placed first with her partner Brendan Boldt in Mystery Architecture said, “I’m really excited about the State Tournament. I can’t wait.”
Brendon Boldt of Plymouth and Hailey Bork of Wayzata, are in the 6th grade at Providence Academy and took first place in Mystery Architecture at the west suburban Regional Science Olympiad tournament.
