Quiz Bowl Competition Finds Providence Academy in the Top Ten

(December 17th, 2007) – Catholic High Schools in the Archdiocese of Minneapolis and St. Paul hosted the 14^th annual eighth grade quiz bowl competition on December 17^th, 2007.  The meet was held at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN.  Forty-eight Catholic grade schools competed in the event.

Providence Academy’s team consisted of Alexa Azarian of Eden Prairie, Hayden Kunz of Plymouth, Alexandra Tilton of Plymouth and Jason Witcraft of Hamel.  The team and its alternates were selected by a general knowledge exam prior to the event.   “We were given a quiz bowl test in class.  I scored second highest out of all the 8^th graders who took the exam.  After I heard how well I did I got really excited about participating because I really like to compete,” said Azarian.  Providence teachers Bernard Carpenter and Bill Fedock coached the team into the top ten.  After competing in the quarter final round, the team finished in a tie for 9^th place.

During the competition students answered 40 to 50 questions per round in a total of six rounds.  General knowledge questions such as, “Name 2 of the 3 main divisions of the brain” (cerebrum, cerebellum and the brain stem) and “Give the French word beginning with T for the clothes and linens a bride collects to begin married life” (trousseau), gave the students a mental workout.  Other questions covered diverse topics from art history, literature, geography, politics, history, and science.

Highlighting the day’s fun was the sixth round of competition held in O’Shaughnessy Auditorium.  A head to head match took place between the final two schools while all participating students and coaches watched.  A trophy was awarded to the top team of the day, Nativity of Mary, located in Bloomington.  “It was really challenging,” said Azarian of the championship round, “You really had to know a lot to be there and I give the final two teams a big hand for making it!”
