Providence Academy Excel Award Winners Excel in Sports, Academics & Leadership

(December 14th, 2007) – Samantha Zopfi and Matt Kopp were recently named Providence Academy’s Excel Award winners for the 2007-08 school year.  Excel is the Minnesota State High School League award standing for Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership.  Zopfi and Kopp, both high school juniors, have demonstrated high levels of academic excellence and exemplified strong leadership skills in the classroom.  They have also modeled citizenship and community involvement amongst their peers.

 Zopfi, who lives in Maple Grove, participates in volleyball, basketball and track at the varsity level.  “I’ve been playing all three sports since 7^th grade,” said Zopfi, “Also, I am in choir and I volunteer outside of school at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale.”  Being a three-sport athlete, participating in campus extra-curricular activities and remaining active in outside volunteerism takes up much of her time, but Zopfi is still an Honor Roll student at Providence.

 In the fall, Matt Kopp can be found on the soccer field.  Kopp, who hails from Medina, has played basketball and baseball for the Academy.  His interest in fine arts motivated him to participate in band, choir and drama.  Currently, he is busy rehearsing the One Act Play, which will be preformed during the One Act state tournament in January.  As Vice President of the junior class, Kopp serves in a leadership role on the student council.

 While both students have developed great athletic abilities, neither has forgotten the importance of academics and citizenship.  “It’s really a nice honor,” stated Zopfi about her award.  Kopp echoed her sentiments by saying, “I truly appreciate being nominated.”
