Veterans’ Day Fully Celebrated at Providence Academy

(November 7, 2007) In June 1954, Armistice Day, which was celebrated on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, was officially changed to Veterans’ Day to honor all U.S. veterans. “We want students to develop a true appreciation of the sacrifices Americans’ have made for freedom throughout the years,” states Dr. Todd R. Flanders, Headmaster of Providence Academy.  To impress patriotism on students, concerts and presentations which lend meaning to “Duty, Honor, Country” are celebrated at the school.

A patriotic high school band concert topped the list of activities at the school.  The song list included a contemporary piece that featured a poem written by John Magee during WWII.   Magee wrote the inspirational poem while he was flying at 30,000 feet and died 3 months later.  Another number entitled “Missing Man” is a song dedicated to men and women in the Air Force that are missing in action.  Legacy Productions helped Mrs. Nicole Clark, band director, reproduce the recent high school patriotic concert so students would have the opportunity to give the CD as a gift.

The book Medals of Honor was the core of the 6th-8th grade Veteran’s Day activity.  The book is packaged with a powerful video of veterans and their stories.  Most medal recipients felt that the medal itself was symbolic of the people who fought and died for the freedoms and privileges that western civilization holds dear and had little to do with themselves personally.  To keep the veterans’ stories alive in students’ daily life, Junior High School Director, Mr. Steve Cunningham, has instituted a Middle School Medal of Honor.  This award will be given to students throughout the year that embody the spirit of selflessness by thinking of others first and not acting just to seek recognition for themselves.

Students in the elementary grades honored veterans through songs, dialogues and greeting cards.  Mrs. Teresa Wilson, Lower School music teacher, orchestrated a concert and  a “Wall of Fame” that pictures relatives or friends of the Providence community that have served or are currently serving in the armed forces.  Wilson believes that seeing a familiar face on the display makes Veterans’ Day meaningful for many younger students.

A patriotic themed concert was one of many activities honoring Veterans’ Day at Providence Academy.
