Providence Academy Named One of the Nation's Best for Four Consecutive Years

(October 22, 2007) – Providence Academy has been named one of the top 50 Catholic secondary schools in the United States in the newly released 2007 Catholic High School Honor Roll.  The Academy is one of only eleven schools that have been continually selected for the award since its inception in 2004. 

The purpose of the Honor Roll is to recognize and encourage excellence in Catholic secondary education and is awarded based on a school’s commitment to academic excellence, Catholic identity and civic education.  All of America’s nearly 1,300 Catholic high schools were invited to apply to the Honor Roll by completing three detailed surveys, with inclusion in the Honor Roll requiring exceptional merit in each of the areas measured.

The Honor Roll is produced in consultation with a national advisory board comprised of Catholic college presidents and noted Catholic scholars.  Advisory board member Rev. John Schlegel, President of Creighton University, said the Honor Roll is significant for Catholic education.  “Catholic High schools that excel at forming students in the faith and at teaching them to think critically and act virtuously are a great asset to the Church,” he said. 

The state of Texas was well represented with six schools selected for the 2007 Honor Roll, followed by California, Florida, and Michigan with four schools each. Providence Academy was the singular Minnesota school to be selected and was also named a category leader in Civic Education for the first time.  Headmaster, Dr. Todd R. Flanders, points to a new civics course in the 8^th grade curriculum and back-to-back sophomore and junior level American History courses as an important part of the Academy’s civic education leadership award.
