Mark Steyn Presents at Providence
International commentator Mark Steyn discussed his current
New York Times bestseller, America Alone, at the Academy April 17,
and answered questions from students.
Steyn is a columnist for, among other publications, The Atlantic Monthly,
National Review, The New Criterion, Maclean’s, The New York Sun, The Chicago
Sun-Times, The Orange County Register, The Washington Times, and The
Jerusalem Post. Because his columns are published on almost every
continent, Steyn is the most read columnist in the world. His book America
Alone discusses demographic decline in Europe
and threat of global jihad to Western civilization.
After a brief presentation that focused on his book, Steyn answered questions
from a list of 33 given to him by the Academy’s high school students. Topics
discussed ranged from Steyn’s Canadian heritage and desire to become an American
citizen, to why he thinks the American democracy is a culture worth saving from
terrorist threats. Steyn argues that K-12 education is particularly important
in advancing principles of Western civilization, including human equality,
justice for all, women’s rights, and religious freedom.
“Steyn’s presentation was a real treat for students and faculty,” said the
Academy’s Headmaster Todd R. Flanders. “He speaks and writes powerfully about
the most important issues of our time. And he manages all this with the wit of
a stand-up comic. It’s quite amazing.”
