Swing to Big Band
At the request of its high school students, Providence
Academy wrapped up Catholic Schools Week with a semi-formal swing dance on
Saturday, February 3rd.
“I think many high school students are looking for a new way of dancing—in this
case, an older way,” said Kevin Ferdinandt, Upper School Director. “They are
tired of the cruder, talentless styles that so often prevail in youth culture.
And I think they are inspired by certain positive things in pop culture, such as
the talent featured on TV’s ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ We have wanted to dare to
be different, and the kids responded! I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
Approximately 150 students – more than half of Providence Academy’s high school
community – attended the dance, where music was provided by Ned Kantar
Productions, a live swing band. In preparation for the dance, Providence
provided students with lessons from professional dance teacher Julie Kendle.
After mastering the initial steps, Ferdinandt was on hand to teach students
additional steps during band breaks. The event was a first in Providence
Academy’s six-year history.
“People were able to dance to the music,” said Providence senior Alexis
Tamosuinas. “The music also fit well with our student culture and for once
everyone was happy with the music style.”
