Five Providence Academy seniors, ten percent of the senior class, have been recognized as part of the 2007 National Merit Scholarship Program. Three of the students earned commended honors and two students are semifinalists in the competition. Marie Conger, daughter of Kelly and Mary Conger of Maple Grove; Nicholas Olson, son of Stephen and Joan Olson of Excelsior and Ryan Thomas, son of Ronald and June Thomas of Corcoran were all recognized as commended students. Commended students were recognized across the nation for their exceptional academic promise, and although they will not continue in the 2007 competition for Merit Scholarship awards, commended students are among the top five percent of more than one million students who entered the competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Ryan Rich, son of Robert and Kris Rich of Minnetonka and Christopher Huber, son of Frank Huber and Debra Ryan-Huber of Maple Grove were recognized as National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. To ensure that academically able young people from all parts of the United States are included in this talent pool, semifinalists are designated on a state representational basis. They are the highest scoring entrants in each state. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, semifinalists must advance to finalist standing in the competition by meeting high academic standards and all other requirements. Next spring, 8,200 Merit Scholarship® awards worth nearly $33 Million will be awarded.
