First-time tournament participant and new Providence Academy parent John Daugherty had no idea that the Third Annual Providence Academy Golf Classic would be anything other than a round of golf with some new friends. However, as Daugherty teed off from Rush Creek Golf Club’s seventh hole, his day was about to become one of the lucky ones. Daugherty’s shot hit the fringe of the green, bounced twice and rolled into the cup, winning him a brand new Mercedes. “I remember telling it to go in and then everything was in slow motion,” says Daugherty. “I remember seeing Andy, Paul and Jamie jumping around and yelling ‘it went in.’ Everyone started giving me high fives. I still can’t believe it.” For Daugherty, who golfs two to three times per week, his hole-in-one shot at the Classic was his third. His first hole-in-one was when he was 12-years-old, the second happened five years ago. Daugherty’s third hole-in-one not only won him a car, but it also helped his foursome win the overall event. Hole In One International provided the insurance for the car. Rush Creek Golf Club has hosted similar events where hole-in-one participants won a boat or $10,000, but Daugherty is the first golfer to win a $40,000 car at the course. “It was a great moment in a great day,” commented Providence Academy Headmaster Todd Flanders, who was on the scene when the shot was made. “Daugherty and I went to the hole together, lifted out the ball, and I said, ‘John, welcome to Providence. The school does have its benefits!’” Proceeds from the Academy’s Golf Classic benefit all of the Academy’s athletic programs. The first two Classics raised more than $70,000 combined to purchase volleyball standards, golf software, basketball uniforms and football and hockey equipment. Daugherty lives in Buffalo with his wife and two sons.
