Providence Academy
Celebrates Stewardship

During the month of November, Providence Academy students celebrated stewardship as part of the Core Knowledge Curriculum’s Core Virtue program.

Throughout November, Providence students held a number of charitable activities to expand their understanding of and participation in the virtue of stewardship.  Students in Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade held a Thanksgiving food drive and collected more than 1,300 pounds of food for CROSS (Christians Reaching Out in Social Service) food shelf, which serves the communities of Rogers, Osseo, Maple Grove, Hassan, Dayton, east Corcoran and west Champlin.  Students also collected more than 130 shoeboxes full of toys and school and hygiene supplies for Operation Christmas Child, a program of Samaritan’s Purse, which delivers the shoeboxes and the word of God to children in desperate situations around the world.  Students in the Academy’s ninth grade class packaged 40 cases (more than 150,000 meals) for Kids Against Hunger, a short-term hunger solution organization in Minneapolis.

Providence Academy’s Kindergarten class also celebrated stewardship with their fifth annual Kindergarten Feast.  Students dressed as pilgrims and Native Americans during the feast and discussed the difficult voyage the pilgrims had to America.   Students also discussed how the Native Americans participated in the virtue of stewardship by helping the pilgrims upon their arrival in a new land.

Providence Academy will further expand on the virtue of stewardship by tying in its December virtue, charity.  A number of additional charitable projects are ongoing, including a toy drive for CROSS food shelf, and a mitten tree, which last year collected more than 240 pairs of mittens for Sabathani Community Center in Minneapolis.  Students will also participate in the Sponsor-A-Family Program through Catholic Charities and Lutheran Social Services, and bell ringing with the Salvation Army.
