Two Providence Academy seniors have been recognized as semifinalists in the 2006 National Scholarship competition. Kathleen Ojeda is the daughter of Randy and Debbie Ojeda and Natalie Dehen is the daughter of Marty and Carrie Dehen. Both are Plymouth residents.
Both students represent a group of approximately 16,000 high school seniors who scored within the top one percent on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT), which they took as juniors. Ojeda and Dehen both move on to the next phase of the competition, in which approximately 8,000 students will be named National Merit Finalists, with opportunities to qualify for scholarships and other educational and corporate-sponsored awards. Finalists will be announced in February 2006.
In addition, Ojeda was recognized as a National Hispanic Scholar by the 2005-06 National Hispanic Recognition Program. Students qualifying for this honor must be at least one-fourth Hispanic and score within the top three percent among all identified Hispanic high school students who took the PSAT in their junior year of high school. Although students achieving this honor do not receive a monetary award, they will have their names distributed to a list of colleges and universities across the country. This allows students the distinct opportunity to hear from colleges/universities that are particularly interested in communicating with prospective students of Hispanic heritage.
