George Weigel was the featured speaker on Wednesday, June 1st at Providence Academy’s inaugural graduation ceremony.

Weigel, a Senior Fellow of the Ethics and Public Policy Center, is a Catholic theologian and one of America’s leading commentators on issues of religion and public life.  He is a consultant on Vatican affairs for NBC News, and his weekly column, "The Catholic Difference," is syndicated to sixty newspapers around the United States.  Weigel is author of the international bestseller Witness to Hope: The Biography of Pope John Paul II, translated into more than 10 languages.   His newest book, published last month, is The Cube and the Cathedral: Europe, America, and Politics Without God.

Of the Academy’s 27 inaugural graduates, 22 have attended Providence from its inception in 2001.  After graduation, 26 of the students will attend a four-year college, including:  Notre Dame, Marquette University, Hillsdale College, the University of St. Thomas, Loyola University Chicago, Carleton College and Drake University.

Graduation activities included a baccalaureate mass, celebrated by Archbishop Harry Flynn,  in the Academy’s Chapel.  The graduation ceremony followed the mass at 8:00 p.m. in the Academy’s Great Room.  Sarah Hayes was honored as the Academy's first valedictorian.  Anna Pfiffner was named the Academy's first salutatorian.

As part of the senior graduation activities, the Academy also held its first junior/senior prom, a cruise on the Queen of Excelsior, on Saturday, May 14th
