A Core-Knowledge Curriculum: The Education of a Lifetime. The key difference between Providence Academy and other Twin Cities schools lies in our core-knowledge curriculum (CKC). Well-organized and clearly defined, the CKC identifies and teaches the essential facts, skills and content a student must understand in order to succeed at the next level of learning. A strong emphasis is placed on mastering the fundamentals of English, Reading and Writing; Math and Science; History, Government and Geography; Foreign Language, Music, Literature and Art, and Physical Education. The CKC approach is unique in is specificity. For example, a fourth-grader studying American History will be able to recite part of the Declaration of Independence, be familiar with Thomas Paine's Common Sense argument for freedom and learn what happened when George Washington crossed the Delaware. A fifth-grader studying Renaissance Literature will read Cervantes' Don Quixote and discover why one of the most unforgettable characters in fiction is also the inspiration for the term "quixotic". In Music, this same fifth-grader will be able to identify tonic and dominant chords and tell why staccato sounds "crisper" than legato. In Science, Ohm's Law is introduced and its effects demonstrated in a series of practical experiments. Visit the Core Knowledge website for more information.
