The Upper School curriculum is designed with competitive college admissions in mind. Choosing Courses to Prepare for College, published by Harvard University, advises high school students to take four years each of math, science, English, history, and a foreign language. Other web resources for college admissions declare: "take English, science and mathematics courses every year." Experts also suggest visual and performing arts electives, as well as options such as economics and statistics. The Academy requires four years of math, English, history, religion and science, the fundamentals of a college preparatory curriculum. Offerings in some subjects, of course, take into account differences in student aptitudes and interests. We also require three years of foreign language with at least two years spent on one language. While all classes are taught at a high level, several honors courses are available. Other requirements and elective offerings similarly aim to provide the finest in college preparation. Providence Academy is known and recognized for emphasis on substance. All students study Shakespeare. All study the founding of the United States and the Civil War era in a unique "civics" concept that emphasizes fascinating fundamentals of the American experience. All learn elements of economics, so important to understanding our world today. All broaden their cultural horizons through in-depth learning about great historical civilizations.
